Matrine is an efficient, low-toxicity, and environmentally friendly botanical pesticide; however, it is mainly applied as a soluble concentrate (SL) with a limited utilization rate that is unsuitable for ultra-low-volume spraying and unmanned aerial vehicles. Therefore, a matrine formulation (such as an oil-based suspension concentrate, OD) is more effective. In this study, matrine ODs were prepared with three kinds of emulsifiers (VO/02N, VO/03, and VO/01). The storage stability, suspensibility, viscosity, surface tension, contact angle, droplet density, fraction of coverage, maximum retention, indoor control, effect of adhesion tension, and adhesion work of matrine ODs were studied. All three types of matrine ODs had favorable stability, and the wetting and spraying performance of the matrine ODs were more effective than those of the matrine SLs. Among the three types of matrine ODs, the viscosity, wettability, spray performance, and maximum retention of the suspension made with emulsifier VO/03 were superior to those of the other two emulsifiers, and they were more effective in controlling Spodoptera frugiperda. Increasing the solution concentration improved the spreading velocity of the droplets on the solid surface and the wettability. The matrine OD prepared from emulsifier VO/03 had the most effective wettability and spraying properties, and it can be used for ultra-low-volume spraying and aerial application. This study offers new insights into the efficient use of plant-based pesticides.

Developing an environmentally friendly and safe nanodelivery system is crucial to improve the efficacy of pesticides and minimize environmental and health risks. However, preparing a completely water-based nanopesticide without using harmful solvents is a technical challenge. In this study, a water-based nanodelivery pesticide system was constructed to improve the efficacy and safety of Emamectin Benzoate (EB). A specific surfactant, 29-(4-(5-hydroxynonan-5yl)phenoxy)-3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27-nonaoxanonacosan-1-ol (SurEB) was designed and synthesized to form a water-based nanodelivery system (EBWNS) with EB. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed the self-assembly and interaction forces between SurEB and EB in water, providing insights into the formation mechanism of EBWNS nanoparticles. The nanodelivery system showed the prolonged effectivity of EB with reduced degradation and demonstrated a good control efficacy for multiple target pests, such as red spider mite, beet armyworm larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and rice stem borers (Chilo suppressalis). Toxicology tests on various objects demonstrated that the EBWNS has low toxicity for seeds, HaCaT cells, zebrafish, earthworm, and E. coli. This study provides a distinctive perspective for developing environmentally friendly nanopesticide formulations, which clarified a water-based treatment method for specific lipid-soluble pesticides. The water-based nanodelivery pesticide system has the potential to improve the efficacy and safety of pesticides in the process of field applications.

Surfactant reduces the surface tension of liquids, resulting in improved emulsion stability, and there is great interest in pesticide additives. Ethoxylate is often used as a pesticide emulsifier. However, the degree of ethoxylation and the existence of dioxane byproducts can significantly affect the performance of emulsifiers. Here, a series of polyoxyethylene tallow amines with the addition of different numbers of ethylene oxide (EO) were synthesized and characterized. Their physical and chemical performances were measured. The ability of POEA as a surfactant to reduce water surface tension and the surface adsorption of molecules were assessed based on the static and dynamic surface tensions. The results show that the surfactant molecules preferentially form a saturated adsorption layer in solution, and the mixed-diffusion-kinetics mechanism dominates the adsorption process. With the increase of the EO addition number, the emulsifying property of POEA increases, while the wetting property gradually decreases and the contact angle increases. These results can provide a basis for the selection of pesticide additives. At the same time, the mechanism of removing dioxane by ethoxylate is described, and a simple and low-consumption method is put forward to reduce the dioxane content. It provides a new idea for the removal of dioxane.
