Impact of enriching larval brine shrimp (Artemia sp.) with a supplement containing polyunsaturated fatty acids on their growth and mortality

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of the study was to determine the impact the commercial supplement S.presso (INVE Aquaculture, Belgium), a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids to enrich the proximate composition of brine shrimp (Artemia sp.), had on their growth and mortality. Four different enrichment protocols were investigated: the supplement was given in one or two doses at various time intervals. The results indicate that while S.presso increased nauplius mortality slightly, administering the appropriate dose reduced … Show more

“…However, the addition of Omega-3 more than 4 mL/99 grams of rice bran caused a decrease in SR. This is because excess Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) can increase oxidative stress in sturgeon larvae [11] and decrease metabolism in Atlantic salmon [19]. Oxidative stress due to excess Omega-3 will cause an increase in free radicals anddamage to cells and tissues [14].…”

“…Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in the development and function of the central nervous system and neurogenesis in the brain, as well as cell division and embryo development (3; 35), where omega-3 fatty acid diets, omega-6 affects neurogenesis in the brain (Homarus americanus) and growth speed related to the number of cells entering the S phase (19). In addition, the presence of omega 3 and omega 6 has been shown to increase egg hatchability and survival as in Artemia, fish and crustaceans (30,15). Low percentage of omega-6 in ephipia M. macrocopa with fish feces is suspected to be the cause of the decrease in ephipia hatching rate even though Ephipia with suspension food of tilapia feces contains EPA fatty acids (0.55%).…”
