Impact of endometriosis on quality of life and work productivity: a multicenter study across ten countries

Abstract: Endometriosis impairs HRQoL and work productivity across countries and ethnicities, yet women continue to experience diagnostic delays in primary care. A higher index of suspicion is needed to expedite specialist assessment of symptomatic women. Future research should seek to clarify pain mechanisms in relation to endometriosis severity.

“…A wide spectrum of symptom severity exists, and the stage of endometriosis at laparoscopy is poorly correlated with the extent and severity of pain, often resulting in misdiagnosis or delay in diagnosis [3]. This is the case with DIE, as symptoms are not specific [2,3]. Bimanual pelvicgynaecologic examination may suggest the presence of DIE by the identification of tender nodules and fibrosis in the cul de sac, but it has poor accuracy in determining the extent of disease [3,36].…”

“…Endometriosis is estimated to affect between 5% and 45% of women of reproductive age, is associated with significant morbidity, and constitutes a major public health concern [1,2]. Symptoms of women with pelvic endometriosis are chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoea, dyspareunia, dyschezia, urinary symptoms, and infertility.…”

“…Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) is defined as an endometriotic lesion penetrating to a depth of at least 5 mm (2) and it affects between 4% and 37% of patients with pelvic endometriosis, often causing pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, dyschezia, urinary symptoms, and infertility (3). Symptoms caused by DIE are not specific, often resulting in misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis (4,5). The pelvic examination may suggest a diagnosis of DIE by the presence of tender nodules and fibrosis in the culde-sac, but it is not very accurate in determining the extent of the disease (6).…”

“…A WPAI kérdőív eredményeit összevetve más szerzők adataival, megállapítható, hogy a betegek teljesítménye (mind a munkában, mind az általános napi tevékeny-ségben) változó mértékben csökkent, de összességében jelentős [34,35]. Simoens és mtsai átlag 755 €/év munkateljesítmény-csökkenést mutattak ki, ami kevesebb a hazai átlagnál, de ez nem elhanyagolható kieső összeg a betegek számára [36].…”
