Fifteen hybrids along with six parents were tested to identify good combiners through analyzing combining ability and gene action for yield and its attributes. The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications during 2010/11 at research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka. Data for days to 50% flowering and 80% maturity, plant height, number of primary and secondary branches, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod length, seed yield and 1000-seed weight was recorded for analysis.The results showed that mean squares for parents, hybrids, parent vs hybrid were significantly different (p<0.01 or p<0.05) for most of the traits. Highly significant mean squares due to general combining ability (GCA) were found for all the traits except for length of pod, whereas highly significant mean squares due to specific combining ability (SCA) were also found for days to 50% flowering, number of secondary branches per plant, number of pods per plant, length of pod and seed yield per plant. This indicated that both additive and non-additive gene effects were important but additive gene effects were predominant for the expression of most of the measured traits. Estimates of GCA and SCA effects for yield and its attributes suggested that parent BARI Sarisha-6, BARI Sarisha-15 and Tori-7 was good combiners for different traits. Hayman’s graphical analysis indicated both over- and partial-dominance for growth and yield attributes. As dominant (non-fixable) variation was high for most of the attributes, substantial improvements of these traits may be possible by transferring complementary gene into non-epistatic high-dominance crosses or eliminating duplicate genes from high-dominance crosses. Considering GCA, SCA and per se performance BARI Sarisha-6, BARI Sarisha-15 and Tori-7 might be good parents towards an effective breeding programme.

Asiatic/Desi cotton (G. arboreum) is in demand in the North zone due to its higher price, tolerance to major sucking insects and better suitability under Cotton-Mustard Cropping system. The production of vigorous seeds in desi cotton is still a major challenge and, the present study was formulated to address this issue. An experiment with nine varieties in RBD was conducted for two years (2020-21 and 2021-22) to ascertain the influence of maturity duration and boll position on seed quality parameters in cotton. The tagged bolls for each genotype were harvested seperately from bottom (up-to 40 cm), middle (41–80 cm) and top position (more than 80 cm of plant height) at 140 days after sowing (DAS), 150 DAS, 160 DAS and 170 DAS respectively, and the seeds obtained after ginning were used for conducting experiments. Genotype, picking time, plant stratum and their interaction influenced the seed physiological parameters significantly. The highest mean germination (%) was observed in the seeds picked at 140 DAS (83.72%) followed by 150 DAS (83.14%) after which a significant decline in germination (%) was noticed. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher Seed vigour index-I (SV-I) & SV-II was noted in the seeds harvested during 140 DAS (2027.77 & 1435.44) to 150 DAS (2158.11 & 1254.21). A gradual decrease in terms of seed vigour parameters after 150 DAS suggested picking of matured bolls during 140 to 150 (DAS) for obtaining seeds with better quality in desi cotton.

Cotton varieties that are high yielding and resistant to pests are required to improve production and productivity and to capitalize on the crop’s enormous potential and its critical role in Ethiopia’s expanding textile industry. Lack of improved cotton technology has forced farmers to recycle local varieties for ages which have become very susceptible to pests which are the major causes of very low productivity and quality of cotton in the country. Among major pests, bollworms (Helicoverpa armigera and Pectinophora gossypiella) account for 36–60% of yield losses. In the absence of genetically resistant or tolerant varieties, genetically engineered bollworm-resistant Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton has offered a great opportunity to reduce crop losses from bollworms. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of bollworm resistance and adaptability of Bt cotton varieties across cotton growing environments in Ethiopia and provide recommendations. Two Bt cotton hybrids (JKCH 1947 and JKCH 1050), one Bt OPV (Sudan), and three OPV conventional varieties (Weyito 07, Stam-59A, and Deltapine-90) were evaluated at seven different agro-ecologies using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Results showed significant differences among genotypes for yield and other traits. Hybrids JKCH 1947 and JKCH 1050 were the top high yielders under high and mild bollworm infestations, with mean seed cotton yield of 3.10 t·ha−1 each and lint yield of 1.20 and 1.19 t·ha−1, respectively, whereas the standard check Deltapine-90 (popular variety) recorded a mean seed cotton and lint yield of 2.3 t·ha−1 and 0.8 t·ha−1, respectively. Combined analysis showed that genotypes, environment, and the genotypes × environment interactions had a highly significant effect ( P < 0.05) on fiber quality. Weyito 07 and the two hybrids (JKCH 1947 and JKCH 1050) had upper half mean fiber lengths in the range of 27.78 to 32.11 mm. For fiber strength, genotypes Weyito 07, JKCH 1050, Stam-59A, and JKCH 1947 had 33.50 g/tex, 28.59 g/tex, 28.00 g/tex, and 27.75 g/tex, respectively. The fiber quality values of the hybrids were within acceptable limits, with staple lengths ranging from 27.78 to 28.44 mm and fiber strengths ranging from 27.75 to 28.59 g/tex. Results show potential adaptation of the hybrids under different cotton growing environments and their superior yield performance due also to added protection of yield losses from damage by bollworms. The contrast is bigger under high insect pressure conditions due to the genetically engineered Bt trait compared to the conventional varieties. The effective field resistance against bollworms in most locations shows that wider use of these hybrids can enhance cotton productivity and quality in Ethiopia.
