Impact of Drilling With Oil Based Mud on Well Control in Horizontal Shale Gas Wells

Abstract: Objective of this study is to shed light to critical well control parameters of horizontal shale gas wells drilled with oil based muds (OBM). This study utilizes an interactive well control simulator to re-evaluate the kick control procedures in water based mud (WBM) and verify its application to oil based mud. Due to gas solubility in OBM a real time drilling and hydraulics data analysis is essential to minimize kick volumes. Therefore, early kick detection and surface warning signs are critical to minimize t… Show more

“…Once free gas moved into the vertical section it expanded and choke pressure increased, and at the bubble point the gas in solution was released and expanded quickly. In contrast to conservative single flow results previously published (Elshehabi and Bilgesu, 2015a), gas kick in OBM resulted in lower circulating pressures compared to WBM. drilled with WBM and OBM.…”

“…Oil-based drilling fluids (OBDFs, the lists of abbreviations are provided in Appendix A Table A1 ) have favorable lubrication, high-temperature resistance, anti-collapse, and contamination resistance performance [ 2 , 3 ], playing a vital role in the development of shale oil and gas and in deep reservoirs [ 4 ]. Although OBDFs have unique advantages in horizontal and deep wells [ 5 ], the low yield point and gel strength of high-density OBDFs under high-temperature conditions affect the ability to carry cuttings and suspend weighting materials [ 6 ].…”

“…erefore, in the expansive formation, enhancing the inhibition of drilling slurry is most important. Inhibitory drilling fluid includes oil-based drilling fluid [9], syntheticbased drilling fluid [10], and water-based drilling fluid [11]. Oil-based drilling fluids and synthetic-based drilling fluids have good inhibition effect, but they cost highly and have adverse impact on environment.…”
