Impact of diurnal temperature range on human health: a systematic review

Abstract: Increasing epidemiological studies have shown that a rapid temperature change within 1 day is an independent risk factor for human health. This paper aimed to systematically review the epidemiological evidence on the relationship between diurnal temperature range (DTR) and human health and to propose future research directions. A literature search was conducted in October 2013 using the databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and EBSCO. Empirical studies regarding the relationship between DTR and mortality … Show more

“…Short-term associations between DTR and health effects have been indicated by numerous studies conducted in Asia using various health outcomes and statistical models (Cheng et al 2014). In the current study, we examined the DTR-mortality relationship in 95 large US communities and observed similar health effects of DTR as those found in Asia.…”

“…A literature review of the DTR-health relationship indicated that few studies have been conducted in other regions such as North America (Cheng et al 2014). A study examined DTR effects on elderly mortality in Canada and observed a cumulative 5 and 11 % increase in mortality due to increases in DTR from the 25th to the 75th and the 75th to the 99th percentile, respectively (Vutcovici et al 2013).…”

“…These variations in the annual temperature trends of TMIN and TMAX in the different stations were also observed for the daily and monthly datasets. This implies that, daily mean temperature is increasing and the DTR which is the difference between the daily TMIN and TMAX, is increasing as well and may lead to health-related issues [56]. Some stations showed an increasing trend for both the TMAX and the TMIN.…”

“…However, high and low ambient temperatures have been associated with mortality (Ma et al, 2014;Guo et al, 2014), cardiorespiratory morbidity (Turner et al, 2012;Ye et al, 2012;Cheng et al, 2014), hospital admissions (Hondula and Barnett, 2014), and children's mortality and hospitalization (Xu et al, 2012). Specifically, the urban heat island effect contributed significantly to health impacts of the 2003 heat wave in Paris (Laaidi et al, 2012).…”
