“…Amongst cancer patients long travel distance constitutes a perceived barrier to treatment [9]. Additionally, a patient's socioeconomic status has been associated with their ability to access specialty centers at increasing distance [10][11][12]. Similarly, travel time to health care services has been shown to influence access, utilization and outcomes for patients with various malignancies [9,[11][12][13][14].…”

Similarly, travel time to health care services has been shown to influence access, utilization and outcomes for patients with various malignancies [9,[11][12][13][14]. For example, women with breast cancer are more likely to present with advanced staged disease, less likely to receive breast conserving surgery and less likely to receive postoperative adjuvant care as the distance from their home to a health care facility increases [13,[15][16][17][18].…”

“…This results in a geographical inequity, such that individuals living farther from a cancer treatment center experience a greater travel burden in order to attend their treatment, particularly those living in rural and remote areas 3 . This travel burden has been shown to have significant effects on patients' tumor stage and grade at the time of diagnosis [4][5][6][7][8][9] , decisions concerning treatment 3,[10][11][12][13] , and survival…”
