This research manuscript deals the electrocatalytic properties of spinel-type oxides of Co and Fe having composition CoxFe3-xO4 (0≤x≤1.5) which is synthesized by natural egg-white mediated sol-gel route. Physicochemical studies (IR and XRD) indicated the formation of almost pure spinel phase of the oxide. Morphological structure in the form of film on Ni-support was observed to be the same except CoFe2O4, which showed some aggregation on the surface of support. For electrochemical characterizations, the oxide powder was transfered to film electrode on the pre-treated Ni-support. The cyclic voltammogram (CV) recorded in 1M KOH at 25°C in the potential region 0.0-0.7 V showed a pair of redox peaks, one anodic (EPa=51212mV) and corresponding cathodic (EPc=359  10mV), prior to oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The anodic polarization study showed that the substitution of Co for Fe in the Fe3O4 lattice marginally improved the electrocatalytic activity of the materials and it is found to the greatest with 0.5 mol Co-substitution. The substitution of Co increased the Tafel slope value, but the order of reaction was almost unity with each electrocatalyst. The standard electrochemical enthalpy of activation (∆H el°≠ ), standard enthalpy of activation (∆H°≠) and standard entropy of activation (∆S°≠) have been determined by recording the anodic polarization at different temperatures. The value of ∆H el°≠ was found to be minimum with most active Co0.5Fe2.5O4 electrode.

Harnessing the potential yields of evergreen perennial crops like tea (Camellia sinensis L.) essentially requires the application of optimum doses of nutrients based on the soil test reports. In the present study, the soil pH, organic carbon (OC), available potassium as K2O (AK), and available sulphur (AS) of 7300 soil samples from 115 tea estates spread over the Dooars ranging from 88°52’E to 89°86’E longitude and 26°45’N to 27°00’N latitude of West Bengal, India have been documented. About 54% of soil samples were found within the optimum range of soil pH (4.50-5.50) for tea cultivation. The overall range of OC was found from 0.28% to 6.00% of which, 94% of the analyzed samples were within the range of satisfactory to excellent level of OC i.e. (>0.80% to 6.00%). Around 36.3% of soil samples were found to have high AK (>100 mg kg-1) but 37.1% of soils were found to have high AS content (>40 mg kg-1). The nutrient index status of soil pH was low in Dam Dim, Chulsa, Nagrakata, Binnaguri, and Jainti sub-districts. Soils from five sub-districts had a high nutrient index (2.47 to 2.83) for soil organic carbon. However, it existed in the medium index (1.69 and 2.22) for Dalgaon and Kalchini sub-districts. Only Nagrakata sub-district soil samples were in the high nutrient index (2.65) for AK. All analyzed samples showed a medium nutrient index (1.97 to 2.27) for AS. The result indicated that soil pH was significantly negatively correlated with soil OC (-0.336) and AK (-0.174). However, the soil OC was significantly positive correlated with AK (0.258) and AS (0.100). It could be concluded that a balanced fertilizer application would be needed as a part of the soil improvement program through soil chemical tests for sustainable tea cultivation.

Yield and nutrient composition of forage crops and their effects on soil characteristics of winter fallow paddy in South China

In terms of providing additional feeds and improving the soil fertility, planting forage crops during the fallow seasons is an effective strategy to promote resource utilization. The objective of this research was to compare the effects of planting different forage crops on the yields and nutritive compositions of forage and soil properties of winter fallow paddy in southern China. Five forage crops, including alfalfa (Medicago sativa, AF), common vetch (Vicia sativa, CV), milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus, MV), smooth vetch (Vicia villosa, SV) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum, IR), were planted by monoculture on the winter fallow paddy in 2017-2018 (season 1) and 2018-2019 (season 2), respectively. The dry matter yield of IR was significantly higher than those of AF, CV, SV and MV (P<0.05). The crude protein yield of IR was significantly higher than those of AF, CV and MV (P<0.05). The neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents of CV, SV and IR were significantly lower than those of AF and MV (P<0.05). Forage crops significantly affected the culturable microbial population of soils (P<0.05). The bacteria, actinomyces and fungi numbers on IR were the highest, while azotobacter number was the lowest. The catalase, acid-phosphatase and invertase activities of IR soil were the lowest. The numbers of bacteria, actinomyces and fungi of IR soil were the highest. IR and SV were the best crops to obtain forage and improve the soil. When producers pursue higher forage yield, we recommend planting Italian ryegrass. If the producers want to improve soil characteristics, smooth vetch is the most suitable plant. These results provide useful information to rice growers for cropping management when growing forage crops (based on the yield and nutritional value) or green manure (based on improving the soil fertility) as an alternative to late rice harvest.
