Impact of diet on CVD and diabetes mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean: a comparative risk assessment analysis

Abstract: Objective: To quantify diet-related burdens of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) by country, age and sex in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Design: Intakes of eleven key dietary factors were obtained from the Global Dietary Database Consortium. Aetiologic effects of dietary factors on CMD outcomes were obtained from meta-analyses. We combined these inputs with cause-specific mortality data to compute country-, age- and sex-specific absolute and proportional CMD mortality of eleven di… Show more

“…A representative study with 9218 individuals living in urban areas of eight LA countries showed that 59.6% were overweight or obese, with Chile showing the highest (68.6%) and Colombia the lowest (50.7%) prevalence [ 4 ]. Obesity is driven by key behavioral and lifestyle risk factors that are in turn modified by socio-demographic and epidemiological changes that have occurred in LA populations over the past decades [ 5 , 6 ].…”

“…CVD and diabetes mellitus (DM) are the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the LAC region, resulting in almost 1 million deaths. In 2016, 18.4 million DALYs were lost to cardiovascular disease (114,115). For diabetics, there were 195,000 deaths, and 8.5 million DALYs were lost in 2016 (114)(115)(116)(117).…”

“…Finally, two very large population surveys in Europe [ 33 ] and Latin America [ 34 ] analyzed the contribution of dietary factors to CVD mortality and found that one of the most important factors, accounting for the largest number of cardiometabolic deaths, was low nut and seed consumption.…”
