Impact of Depression on Work Productivity and Its Improvement after Outpatient Treatment with Antidepressants

Abstract: We confirmed that significant productivity loss arises from MDD and that this loss can be reduced with psychiatric intervention after a time period as short as 8 weeks. Mental health professionals should work with employers to devise a cost-effective system to provide workers with accessible quality care.

“…Wang et al [2011] estimated that 83% workers with mental disorders needed treatment but that only 31% had received work place accommodations. Studies have shown that employers would benefit in productivity and cost savings with enhanced depression care consisting of a depression screen and care management for workers with depressive illnesses [Wang et al, , 2008Woo et al, 2011]. The stigma attached to having a psychiatric disorder is such that employees may be reluctant to seek treatment, especially fearing that they might jeopardize their jobs in doing so.…”

“…According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM-IV), the main symptoms that define the diagnostic criteria for MDD are low mood, anhedonia and anergia, lasting for a period of at least two weeks [4]. The presence of these symptoms severely impairs daily functionality and contributes to loss of productivity [5,6]. MDD is associated with a variable prognosis and chronic course; the median duration of an episode is reported to be 23 weeks, with 25% of individuals proceeding to suffer further episodes in their lifetime [7].…”

Cognitive symptoms are common in MDD and have been shown to be present up to 94% of the time during depressive episodes and up to 44% of the time during periods of remission.…”
