Impact of curcumin, quercetin, or resveratrol on the pathophysiology of endometriosis: A systematic review

Abstract: Endometriosis, a gynecological disease that affects reproductive age women is difficultly controlled in the long term by currently available treatments, prompting patients to adopt self-controlled interventions including dietary changes. The aim of this review is to provide evidence of how curcumin, quercetin, and resveratrol can act as natural interventions to control endometriosis. The review followed PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A comprehensive sear… Show more

“…Quercetin has been used to target IL-1β and suppress apoptosis in vascular endothelial cells in the treatment of atherosclerosis [ 315 , 316 ], in the treatment of cardiovascular disease [ 317 ], and in inflammatory processes effecting quality of life in post-myocardial infarction [ 318 ]. Quercetin has also been examined in inflammatory processes in polycystic ovary syndrome [ 319 ], combination therapies in the treatment of endometriosis [ 320 ], and in antiviral applications in COVID-19 [ 321 ]. Quercetin has been examined in combination therapy with green tea polyphenols in the treatment of prostate cancer [ 322 ], and the safety of quercetin supplementation assessed in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [ 323 ].…”

“…Plant extracts, including pueraria lobata and black garlic extracts, have been widely confirmed to play an anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic and antioxidant roles in endometrial cells. Bioactive substances, including resveratrol, catechin, and curcumin, are believed to modulate a variety of signaling pathways and have therapeutic effects in endometriosis ( Kamal et al., 2021 ; Hipolito-Reis et al., 2022 ; Madanes et al., 2022 ). Although botanical drugs have shown good “potential” in vitro and in animal experiments, the data from clinical double-blind randomized controlled trials are still insufficient.…”
