Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic and Lockdown on the Epidemiology of RSV-Mediated Bronchiolitis: Experience from Our Centre

Abstract: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected the global epidemiology of other infectious respiratory diseases, leading to a significant decrease in their incidence. Hence, we aimed to characterize the epidemiology of RSV-bronchiolitis in children. Methods: children aged ≤2 years diagnosed with RSV-mediated bronchiolitis admitted to our Unit from October 2018 to December 2021, were retrospectively enrolled. Results: We included 95 patients (M/F = 46/49; mean age 7.56 ± 6.6 months). Specifically, … Show more

“…30 However, a considerable increase in RSV infections has been described in 2021 and fall of 2022. 11,12 Since there are different theories proposed for this increase in cases, it seems logical to think that in the coming months and years, we will witness a new upturn in publications related to infantile bronchiolitis, trying to find plausible explanations for this upturn in cases.…”

“…The most critical reason for this is the increase in cases of bronchiolitis observed after the removal of the isolation measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. 11,12 The fifth cluster, in purple, is engaged with intensive care management. The main keywords are artificial ventilation, pediatric intensive care unit, positive end respiratory pressure, oxygen therapy, cannula, or oxygenation.…”
