Impact of Continental Freshwater Runoff on Coastal Sea Level

Abstract: Freshwater discharge to the coastal ocean is a fundamental component of the global water cycle. It can impact coastal sea level over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. Here we review the status of the current knowledge based on observational and modeling approaches. The main limitation in studies of the influence of rivers on coastal sea level has been the lack of consolidated discharge databases. We first provide an inventory of the main data sources currently available. We then review the existing… Show more

“…Such a behavior is definitely associated to coastal processes that were not visible with former altimetry products (e.g., Cazenave et al, 2017, Birol et al, 2017. This may be the result of wind-induced setup, river freshwater runoff, or wave forcing on shallow shelves (e.g., Piecuch et al, 2018, Durand et al, 2019, Melet et al, 2018. At embayed coasts and estuaries and shallow areas, cross-shore winds can drive important surge, such as observed off Senegal over the wide shelf during winter upwelling (Capet et al, 2017).…”

“…Large river fresh water plumes can change water density and affect coastal sea level (e.g. Han and Webster, 2002;Brammer, 2014, Piecuch et al, 2018, Durand et al, 2019. Waves radiate energy over long distances in deep water without any…”

“…To reproduce the seasonal changes in water level observed in the northern Bay of Bengal, we have also imposed an annual cycle of 35 cm amplitude along the southern open boundary in the same manner as Tazkia et al [42]. The river freshwater fluxes-one of the ingredients of coastal water-level variability [44]-are prescribed in the inland open boundaries. We have prescribed rated daily discharges at the upstream boundaries of Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers with observed data provided by Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) for 2014.…”

“…This contribution is known as halosteric sea level changes. The discharge results in a low-salinity plume that remains at the ocean surface because of its low density and contributes locally to sea level [6]. The modification of the upper ocean heat content by the plume [7] could also lead to a thermosteric contribution to the regional sea level.…”

“…The remainder of the year, the NBC connects with the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) through a retroflection zone between 5°N and 10°N, transporting the Amazon plume to the east [21,22]. Durand et al [6] suggest that the impact of the Amazon River discharge on sea level is potentially important at global and regional scales. The authors converted the Amazon discharge into units of equivalent GMSL and show that the standard deviation of its interannual variability is 0.4 mm.…”
