Impact of compound flood event on coastal critical infrastructures considering current and future climate

Abstract: Abstract. The changing climate and anthropogenic activities raise the likelihood of damage due to compound flood hazards, triggered by the combined occurrence of extreme precipitation and storm surge during high tides and exacerbated by sea-level rise (SLR). Risk estimates associated with these extreme event scenarios are expected to be significantly higher than estimates derived from a standard evaluation of individual hazards. In this study, we present case studies of compound flood hazards affecting critica… Show more

“…In this context, we suggest employing hydrodynamic models to study event‐based storylines which explore in detail low‐likelihood, high‐impact future plausible events, with an emphasis on plausibility rather than probability (Hazeleger et al., 2015; Shepherd, 2019). Event‐based storylines can be built based on expert knowledge, major past floods (Helaire et al., 2020; Khanam et al., 2021), or near‐misses (Woo, 2021). One could investigate: what would be the societal impact of past fluvial flooding combined with the projected sea‐level rise?…”

“…Riverine and coastal floods characterized by the simultaneous or successive occurrence of high sea levels and high river flows can be life threatening and cause infrastructures damage (Nadal et al, 2010;Ganguli et al, 2020;Khanam et al, 2021). This type of flooding was remarkable during hurricane Harvey in Houston-Galveston Bay (Valle-Levinson et al, 2020;Huang et al, 2021b).…”

“…The free software HEC-RAS 6.0 version is capable of 2D unsteady flow simulation [47]. HEC-RAS 2D modelling and mapping had already been implemented successfully in several recent studies [18,24,[48][49][50][51][52][53][54]. Moreover, some studies tested the recent capabilities of the updated HEC-RAS [55] and the efficiency of the two-dimensional (2D) HEC-RAS model [56].…”
