Purpose This paper aims to explore the current state of website environmental communications in Latin American universities through a benchmarking operational tool. The study considers how these universities communicate their environmental policies as an act of corporate social responsibility and to improve their public image. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 80 top-ranked Latin American universities was considered. Environmental websites were evaluated in terms of information quality, multimodal design and stakeholder engagement. The research method follows the theoretical foundations of critical discourse analysis, multimodal studies and ecolinguistics. Findings A total of 59% of the universities have opened environmental websites. However, many of them have poor content and interactivity. Latin American universities obtain low scores in several objective criteria which measure the efficiency of website environmental communications. Practical implications The findings can help university administrators to improve the quality and effectiveness of online environmental communications. Some practical recommendations are given and examples of good practice can be emulated. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study that analyses the situation of website environmental communications in a large sample of Latin American universities. The development of an operational benchmarking tool invites further comparative studies, which may contribute to a wider picture of environmental communications.

Pembangunan lestari merupakan asas yang penting dalam dalam memastikan kesejahteraan hidup masyarakat yang holistik dan situasi ini bukan sahaja boleh dilaksanakan di sesebuah bandar namun ia juga harus dipraktikkan di sesebuah kampus universiti. Dalam konteks ini, kampus universiti juga dianggap sebagai "bandar kecil" yang mana membentuk satu komuniti yang menjalankan aktiviti harian. Tujuan penyelidikan ini dilakukan adalah untuk memahami persepsi komuniti kampus terhadap inisiatif dan amalan kelestarian yang dilaksanakan di Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Ini kerana belum ada kajian yang bertujuan untuk melihat sejauh mana penglibatan dan penghayatan amalan kelestarian di kampus USM. Kajian kualitatif ini menggunakan kaedah temubual bersama 20 orang responden yang dipilih menggunakan persampelan bertujuan. Data di analisis secara tematik dan hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa komuniti USM beranggapan bahawa kelestarian adalah sangat penting dan secara umumnya mereka sangat mengambil berat tentang kelestarian serta turut terlibat dalam inisiatif dan aktiviti kelestarian di kampus. Kajian ini merumuskan bahawa penting untuk memahami persepsi dan amalan tentang kelestarian kampus terutamanya untuk mereka yang bertanggungjawab terhadap isu kelestarian di USM.

The growing debate about global environmental problems is evident in several spheres of society. The concern for the future of the planet is used as a political slogan, inspiring the creation of new laws and encouraging academic research that serves this purpose, as well as increasing the number of government agencies concerned with this matter. The 21st century is considered the "century of sustainable development". Sustainability education in high schools has the potential to make the benefits of civil construction more visible to society and media by showing students, parents, and communities in general how sustainability in the built environment can improve their lives in economic, social, and environmental aspects. This study was applied in three high schools of Juiz de Fora (Brazil) and Guimarães (Portugal). These high schools have similar characteristics regarding teaching patterns and commitment to strengthening sustainability in their respective regions and reflect their socio-economic conditions, governmental strategies, everyday habits, and cultural attributes. The information was collected through questionnaires applied to high school students in 2017. This paper shows the need for including an indicator of sustainability awareness in sustainability assessment tools for high school buildings.
