Frailty and ageing are bound together, and frailty is linked with reduced capacity and low ability to survive adverse health outcomes. While ageing is glowing globally, in Burundi, a lot has been done to protect and improving the lives of old people, however, multiple challenges persist and limit them from benefiting from their human rights. We, therefore, thought to assess for factors influencing their quality of life, and then to discuss about measures to be taken to ensure ageing in good health. A descriptive cross-sectional study was done in three hospice care sites in Burundi and 57 participants were interviewed using a questionnaire between 16 February and 28th March 2022. Data were analyzed using the Computer Software Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS 20.0). The relationship was considered significant when the P-value was less than the level of significance (<0.05) at 95% confidence interval. The research found that social status is linked with physical frail (p=0.029), and marital status was associated with the apparition of physical signs of frailty (p=0.005); In addition, 47.32 % with the underlining condition were without medication, 90% attended to a clinic 2 times and plus while 28.07% were admitted, 50.87% complained about the limited access to medicine and medical care and 61.40% complained about the variety and the quality of food. These factors can impact ageing in good health, and we recommend that comprehensive support for elderly people be in place and future research compare home-based support and support from hospice care. Introduction: Dizziness may be associated with negative health outcomes. This study aimed to determine the associations between dizziness and mental and physical health outcomes in middle-aged and older community-dwelling adults in India. Methods: Cross-sectional data from 72,262 individuals (≥ 45 years) of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) Wave 1 in 2017-2018 were analyzed. Dizziness was assessed with the question of having persistent or troublesome dizziness or light headedness in the past two years. Results: More than one in seven participants (13.7%) reported past 2-years dizziness. In adjusted logistic, linear and Poisson regression analyses, dizziness was associated with worse self-rated health status, lower life satisfaction, major depressive disorder, insomnia symptoms and severe fatigue. Regarding physical health, dizziness increased the odds of pain conditions, cardiovascular conditions, chronic lung disease, functional limitations, fall history, hearing loss, impaired vision and higher number of medications currently used. In addition, in the unadjusted analysis, dizziness was negatively associated with cognitive functioning. Conclusion: Dizziness was associated with six poor mental health and eight poor physical health outcomes. Findings support multidimensional management of dizziness in the general population.

How Healthcare Utilization Due to Dizziness and Vertigo Differs Between Older and Younger Adults

BackgroundVertigo and dizziness are common in older adults. We describe self-reported healthcare utilization because of dizziness and vertigo in older adults attending a tertiary care specialized vertigo center.MethodsData from 765 patients (45% were ≥60 years old) with chronic dizziness and vertigo who attended a daycare multimodal treatment program were recorded. Data included sociodemographic parameters, dizziness-related characteristics, the Body Sensations Questionnaire (BSQ), the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire (ACQ), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Also, healthcare utilization, including (1) physician and clinical services, (2) hospitalizations in the year before consulting the vertigo center, (3) prescription of drugs and other professional services were included. Descriptive statistics, exploratory data analysis, and regression models were used.ResultsIntensity of dizziness was similar in both age groups, however, distress due to dizziness was more severe in younger persons. Dizziness symptoms lasted longer in older adults than in younger persons. Older adults had a somatic diagnosis (74.6 vs. 35.0%) more frequently and reported more falls (37.2 vs. 28.5%) than younger individuals. Anxiety about bodily sensations was higher in younger patients (mean BSQ1 = 9.33 ± 5.6) than in older patients (mean BSQ1 = 6.72 ± 5.4). Older persons had fewer depressive symptoms (mean HADS depression = 5.8 ± 3.6 vs. 6.5 ± 4.1) and less anxiety (mean HADS anxiety = 5.7 ± 3.7 vs. 7.8 ± 4.1) than younger individuals. Younger people were more frequently hospitalized (24.4%) than older adults (16.3%) in the year before consulting the vertigo center. Also, younger patients and patients with non-somatic etiologies had considerably more consultations with healthcare providers than older patients. Older adults received less medication (50.3%), less physiotherapy (41%), and less psychological therapy (11.6%) for vertigo than younger people (59.7, 52.2, 20.4%, respectively).ConclusionAge-associated differences in healthcare utilization were defined in selected patients attending a specialized vertigo center. Since dizziness is frequently a heterogeneous disorder requiring interdisciplinary care, its diagnostic and therapeutic work-up must be improved for older patients with dizziness.
