Impact of combination of short lecture and group discussion on the learning of physiology by nonmajor undergraduates

Abstract: This study assessed the impact of an "active learning" strategy employed alone or in combination with traditional lectures on the learning of mammalian physiology by undergraduate students. The study investigated the impact of three teaching strategies, namely: (a) traditional lecture, (b) group discussion alone, and (c) combination of lecture and group discussion. For all strategies, students were given homework in a textbook and they completed written assignment before each session. Every student led the dis… Show more

“…A study showed that the average marginal effect of teaching + discussion on student performance is higher than discussion mode.. Therefore, on the premise of ensuring student-centeredness, the importance of teachers in TBL should be strengthened [10]. In this study, the students were divided into several groups to check the latest progress of the world's famous universities in this eld on the different topics determined.…”

“…In future implementation of the module, a conceptual quiz on the research theme could be incorporated to evaluate the scientific knowledge gained by students through group activities and presentations. Indeed, active-learning approaches such as class discussions of scientific material have been shown to significantly improve student performance in physiology classrooms (e.g., Asem and Rajwa, 2023;Ghorbani and Ghazvini, 2016). Secondly, semantic graphs can be generated by students as a culminating activity by consolidating the meta summaries in…”
