Field independence refers to the ability to perceive details from the surrounding context as a whole and to represent the environment by relying on an internal reference frame. Conversely, field dependence individuals tend to focus their attention on single environmental features analysing them individually. This cognitive style affects several visuo-spatial abilities including spatial memory. This study assesses both the effect of field independence and field dependence on performance displayed on virtual environments of different complexity. Forty young healthy individuals took part in this study. Participants performed the Embedded Figures Test for field independence or dependence assessment and a new spatial memory recognition test. The spatial memory recognition test demanded to memorize a green box location in a virtual room picture. Thereafter, during ten trials participants had to decide if a green box was located in the same position as in the sample picture. Five of the pictures were correct. The information available in the virtual room was manipulated. Hence, two different experimental conditions were tested: a virtual room containing all landmarks and a virtual room with only two cues. Accuracy and reaction time were registered. Analyses demonstrated that higher field independent individuals were related to better spatial memory performance in two landmarks condition and were faster in all landmark condition. In addition, men and women did not differ in their performance. These results suggested that cognitive style affects spatial memory performance and this phenomenon is modulated by environment complexity. This does not affect accuracy but time spent. Moreover, field dependent individuals are unable to organize the navigational field by relying on internal reference frames when few landmarks are available, and this causes them to commit more errors.

Представлены результаты исследования степени выраженности когнитивных стилей полезависимость / поленезависимость, импульсивность / рефлективность, гибкий / ригидный познавательный контроль у геймеров (активных игроков в компьютерные игры) и у людей, в компьютерные игры не играющих. Объем выборки составил 145 человек, средний возраст 24 ± 5 лет, из них 88 играют в компьютерные игры, 57 – не играют в компьютерные игры и составляют контрольную группу исследования. В качестве измерительной процедуры использовались традиционные методики исследования когнитивных стилей: тест встроенных фигур Г.Уиткина, тест сопоставления знакомых картинок Дж.Кагана, тест словесно-цветовой интерференции Дж.Струпа. Методологическим основанием работы послужил когнитивно-стилевой подход и концепция когнитивного стиля как квадриполярного измерения М.А.Холодной. Исследование показало, что в группе геймеров по сравнению с контрольной группой более выражены поленезависимый и рефлективный когнитивный стили. Значимых различий по выраженности когнитивного стиля гибкий / ригидный познавательный контроль обнаружено не было. Выявленная когнитивно-стилевая специфика, характерная для геймеров, указывает на особенности первичной переработки информации геймерами и, предположительно, может быть связана с особенностями функционирования механизмов непроизвольного интеллектуального контроля.

Cognitive style refers to the preference in perceiving, organizing and remembering information. Different cognitive styles have been identified across the years. Amongst others, field-dependence/independence cognitive style is the extent to which the person perceives part of a field as discrete from the surrounding environment as a whole, rather than embedded in the field. Instead, visualizer/verbalizer cognitive style involves the preference in processing visual versus verbal information. Both cognitive styles can influence navigational behaviour. The present study aimed at clarifying the extent to which field-dependence/independence and visualizer/verbalizer cognitive styles affect route-based navigational tasks. Therefore, 44 healthy participants from L'Aquila City were assessed for their cognitive styles and were asked to perform two different navigational tasks: reorder paths using a series of photos depicting landmarks from L'Aquila (visually presented task, visual path task-VisPT); orally describe specific paths of L'Aquila (verbally presented task, verbal path task-VerPT). Results showed that the field-independence cognitive style predicted response times of VisPT, whereas the visualizer/verbalizer cognitive style predicted the instructions given when performing the VerPT, namely, the number of metrical distance indicators provided by participants. By investigating two different cognitive styles, the study clarifies that field-dependence/independence and visualizer/verbalizer cognitive styles can play a different role in spatial navigation and suggests that the material by which a navigational task is presented affects its performance.
