Impact of climate change on biodiversity and food security: a global perspective—a review article

Abstract: Climate change is happening due to natural factors and human activities. It expressively alters biodiversity, agricultural production, and food security. Mainly, narrowly adapted and endemic species are under extinction. Accordingly, concerns over species extinction are warranted as it provides food for all life forms and primary health care for more than 60–80% of humans globally. Nevertheless, the impact of climate change on biodiversity and food security has been recognized, little is explored compared to t… Show more

“…Climate change and rapid population growth pose enormous hurdles to achieving food security, which remains a primary concern for all stakeholders and governments ( Muluneh, 2021 ; Dasgupta and Robinson, 2022 ). Feeding the rapidly expanding global population, which is anticipated to exceed 10 billion people by 2050 and needs 49% additional food, is a major challenge ( Ahmar et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Climate change is considered as a universal truth across the globe with subsequent untoward impacts on agricultural food production, water resources, biodiversity, human livelihoods, forest farming systems, and socio-economic components ( Muluneh, 2021 ). It has been projected that due to anticipated global climate change, developing and underdeveloped countries will suffer from adverse impacts because of less adaptive capacity.…”

“…UV radiation not only affects humans but the animal, plant and marine life is also significantly impacted ( 13 ). There is a growing concern that ozone layer depletion may lead to the loss of many threatened plant species and disrupt the global food security ( 14 ). However, plants have built the ability to respond and adapt to high UV levels; they can be affected directly due to high UV radiations ( 15 ), affecting most plant species’ survival ( 16 ).…”
