Impact of Carpets on Indoor Air Quality

Abstract: Interest in having a healthy and well-being environment has increased the awareness to improve indoor air quality (IAQ). Building materials influence the contribution of indoor air pollution, so understanding their behaviour on IAQ is essential. Among building materials, carpets cover surfaces of indoor environments and significantly impact IAQ due to their large surface area and multi-layers of materials components. This review aimed to consolidate what is known about how carpet impacts indoor volatile organi… Show more

“…Although this is highly prevalent in LMICs, rural communities in LMICs that are marginalised and economically poor are the most vulnerable. Other important sources of indoor air pollution include tobacco products, building materials such as asbestos-containing insulation, newly installed carpeting, and certain wood pressed products [ 4 ].…”

“…7 As a result, several studies have reviewed how carpets affect indoor air quality regarding emission, sink and transformation of VOC from carpets. 8,9 The introduction of several voluntary standards for monitoring VOC emitted by carpets has stimulated the manufacturers to produce carpets with less primary emissions. 10,11 However, information on secondary emissions as well as the sorption of VOC by carpets is lacking.…”

“…10,11 However, information on secondary emissions as well as the sorption of VOC by carpets is lacking. 8 Carpet materials have been shown to be able to ad(b)sorb VOC. 4,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Moreover, from the carpets available, it has been seen that wool carpets are the most promising.…”
