Impact of Building Orientation on Daylight Availability and Energy Savings Potential in an Academic Classroom

Abstract: In this paper, daylight availability depending on building orientation in a typical educational classroom was investigated. Measurements of daylight illuminance distributions in the room depth for different illuminance outside the building allowed to determine the conditions when the luminaires in a classroom could be turned off, turned on, or dimmed. The outdoor daylight illuminance on the south-east and north façade of the building was recorded and the numbers of hours per year of university activity during … Show more

“…Prior studies have emphasized the significance of daylighting due to its numerous beneficial effects, including enhancing psychological well-being, health, and production [1]. The daylighting quality is significantly impacted by several factors, including the building's geometry, orientations, space distribution, and light apertures [2] [3]. In addition, daylight availability is contingent upon the atmospheric conditions and the sun's trajectory during a particular time or interval within each climatic region [4].…”

“…This strategy also applies to room lighting systems. Several approaches for automating lighting has been introduced, such as on/off control (Kaminska, 2020), time-scheduling (Qahtan et al, 2019), occupant detection (Papinutto et al, 2022), retrofitting (Al-Ghaili et al, 2020, constant illumination (Han et al, 2019) and dimming control (Kaminska & Ożadowicz, 2018). In previous research, dimming control contributed to more than 30% of energy savings compared to implementing on/off control (Kaminska, 2020).…”

In previous research, dimming control contributed to more than 30% of energy savings compared to implementing on/off control (Kaminska, 2020). Therefore, in this research, a study was carried out on the potential for saving electrical energy consumption in one of the rooms in the Electrical Engineering Building with a lighting system automation strategy with dimming control.…”

“…Current studies have focused on the impact of building orientation on energy efficiency, thermal comfort, lighting, performance and ventilation (Aini and Nadia, 2019, Gonçalves et al, 2021, Kaminska, 2020. Additionally, Choi and Storr (2019) identified a relationship between rent increase and tenant retention in commercial real estate.…”
