The results of a pilot-scale study on the influence of electric field use for stimulating the active sludge in the biological purification tank of a small capacity wastewater treatment plant (up to 600 m3/day) are presented. Through specific comparative chemical tests (DO, COD, N-NH4, and Pt) it was found that, by applying a sinusoidal electric field of 5 Vrms/m at 49.9 Hz on the active sludge suspension, the overall pollutant denitrification process speed is doubled compared with the reference case when no stimulation is used. Also, under identical operating conditions, the residual pollutant content of the biological treatment tank outlet water is reduced approximately three times for COD and approximately two times for N-NH4 and Pt compared to the reference tank. These findings lead to the conclusion that, by stimulating the active sludge microbial activity of the wastewater treatment plants by a sinusoidal electric field of 5 Vrms/m at 49.9 Hz, the time of the biological purification treatment can be reduced by approx. 50%. This leads to a corresponding decrease in energy consumption, which usually represents more than 30% of a wastewater treatment plant’s specific electricity consumption.

Within the Poodří nature reserve and the Odra River old parallel channel, Slaňáky, various forms of phosphorus were investigated due to increased high concentrations of total phosphorus (Ptot) in the surface water. Surface water samples were subjected to chemical analyses using absorption spectrophotometry (Ptot and P-PO4 3-) and accompanying parameters (t, O2, pH, Cond, TSS ) were measured. Next, grain size analysis of the sediment and sediment analyses using X-ray fluorescence were carried out (P, Fe, Al, Ca, Si, K, Mn, S, etc.). The seasonality of Ptot concentrations in the water was not confirmed, the reservoir behaved as a pool. The concentrations of the dissolved inorganic form P-PO4 3were low when compared to Ptot, thus suspended phosphorus prevailed. This may be related to the low depth of the given water body, where stratification does not occur in contrast to deep water bodies. However, sediment resuspension is frequent, and phosphorus largely accumulates. The concentrations of Ptot in the sediment ranged around 4900 mg/kg, where the inorganic form prevailed (87.24 -93.73 %) over the organic (6.27 -12.76 %). At the same time, the sediment samples were abundant for sand fractions (2 -0.03 mm), 47.86 -60.89 %, and finest silt and clay (< 0.063 mm), 33.07 -44.60 %.

A system for electromagnetic stimulation of microorganisms' activity from the active sludge of wastewater treatment plants was developed and preliminarily tested. Through electrochemical, gravimetric, XRD, and SEM-EDAX measurements, it was found that austenitic stainless steel 18/8 presents good stability to AC polarization in wastewater. Preliminary determinations performed through the dielectric spectroscopy technique indicated that the activated sludge's microbial flora is sensitive to 50 ± 0.1 Hz. The stimulation system developed and put into service on the biological aerobic treatment bioreactor consists of a pair of polarizing electrodes, made of perforated 18/8 stainless steel sheet, electrically connected to a power supply, which at 50 Hz is capable of debiting adjustable voltages between 5 and 24 Vrms at a maximum current of 5 A. Preliminary in situ measurements showed that following the stimulation of the microorganisms from the sludge suspension, as a result of an applied electromagnetic field of approximately 4.5 V/m at 50 Hz, the metabolism of residues is accelerated substantially (organic residues determined by oxygen demand decrease by about 42 %, nitrogen/ammonium content by about 44% and total phosphorus by about 50 % which results in an increase in free oxygen concentration by about 71 %).
