Impact of Breast Cancer and Combination Chemotherapy on Oxidative Stress, Hepatic and Cardiac Markers

Abstract: PurposeCarcinoma of the breast is the most prevalent cancer among Egyptian women and constitutes 29% of National Cancer Institute cases. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of breast cancer on oxidative stress, cardiac markers and liver function tests, moreover the role of 5-fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide (FAC) in the treatment of breast cancer and its mechanism through changing the measured markers.MethodsForty female breast cancer patients who were admitted to the Department of… Show more

“…An elevated serum LDH enzyme activity is the consequence of increased anaerobic glycolysis in rapidly dividing malignant cells and subsequent cell destruction [18]. Increased level of serum LDH suggests the increase rate of enzyme leakage from mitochondria as a result of doxorubicin-induced toxicity [11]. A study by Basnyat et al [19] reported that elevated serum lipids level increased the risk of cardiovascular disease during BC management by FAC combination.…”

“…5-Fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide (FAC) is the most common combination of chemotherapy drugs used in breast cancer treatment that is often associated with oxidative stress, hepatotoxicity and cardiotoxicity [11]. Elevated levels of cardiac enzymes LDH and creatine kinase (CK) after FAC treatment is evidence of the cardiotoxic effect of chemotherapy [12].…”

“…The etiology of the breast cancer is multifactorial, and besides genetic predisposition, the most known environmental risk factors (age, obesity, drugs, hormones, etc.) have been linked to the oxidative damage to the breast cells also [3,4].…”

“…3 Apart from these, a number of genes, like BRCA1 and BRCA2, and p53 have been linked to breast cancer susceptibility and development. 4 Etiology of breast cancer is multifactorial which includes genetic, environmental, social, demographic and hormonal factors. Evidences are there to prove the occurrence of the disease as a result of increased oxidative stress.…”

“…Similar observations were also found in the studies conducted by Kasapovic et al, and Prabasheela et al, where the blood levels of catalase and superoxide dismutase were found to decrease that indicated increased activity of the free radicals in the breast cancer patients and decreased level of antioxidants as they are utilized for quenching free radicals. 4,11,12 This study was thus undertaken to assess and compare the oxidative stress in breast cancer patients with age and sex matched controls. Aim was to assess the oxidative stress in breast cancer patients and to compare it with that of healthy controls.…”
