Impact of basal diet on dextran sodium sulphate (DSS)-induced colitis in rats

Abstract: These results show that a purified diet promotes the onset of a more severe induced colitis than a non-purified one, highlighting the influence of basal diet in colitis development.

“…In addition, T and natural killer cells are mediated by the IL-12 cytokine, which in turn fuels TNF-α secretion ( 49 ). As reported previously, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels (TNF-α, IL-12, and IL-1β) in colonic tissues were elevated significantly by DSS exposure ( 50 , 51 ). These cytokines have been inhibited by Lactobacillus species, endowing the latter with reduction of pro-inflammatory properties ( 52 54 ).…”

“…Cytokines are recognized to play a crucial role in the immunopathogenesis of IBD . DSS significantly increased the levels of pro‐inflammatory cytokines such as IL‐1 β , IL1‐ α , IFN‐ γ and IL‐6 in colonic tissue, as reported previously . GPE consumption greatly prevented the rise of these cytokines and decreased the TNF‐ α level.…”

“…Colonic MMP‐9 levels have been closely correlated with colonic damage . Here, DSS stimulated MMP9 mRNA expression, as reported . Furthermore, all GPEs prevented this up‐regulation of MMP9 expression, which may have helped attenuate colitis symptoms and tissue alterations.…”

“…In comparison to the diverse microbiota of mice reared on conventional grain-based chow, the immune phenotype of the microbiome of mice fed purified, phytochemical-free diets (often termed AHR ligand-free diets) is changed in a manner similar to that seen in AHR-deficient animals [ 28 , 112 , 113 ]. Like the AHR-deficient mice, animals fed purified, phytochemical-free diets exhibit enhanced susceptibility to severe colitis [ 113 , 114 , 115 ]. Furthermore, there are numerous reports that phytochemicals—including berberine [ 116 ], curcumin [ 117 ], galangin [ 118 ], resveratrol [ 119 ], and rutin [ 120 ]—can prevent microbial dysbiosis and stimulate colonization of the gut by beneficial anaerobic bacteria (reviewed by [ 121 , 122 ]).…”
