Impact of Antimicrobial Dipping Solutions on Postoperative Infection Rates in Patients with Diabetes Undergoing Primary Insertion of a Coloplast Titan Inflatable Penile Prosthesis

Abstract: Background Modern-day penile prostheses use infection retardant coating to decrease rates of postoperative infection, subsequently reducing explantation and revision rates as well. The Coloplast Titan models are dipped into antimicrobial solutions right before implantation, and the components used for dipping can be tailored toward the patient. Aim To compare infection, explantation, and revision rates among different dipping… Show more

“…It was shown than the vast majority of penile prosthesis surgeons use some sort of antibiotic irrigation perioperatively/ intraoperatively (16). A large multi-center review of 932 patients revealed significantly lower rates of infection when using a gentamycin plus vancomycin dipping solution compared to all other dipping solutions (17).…”

“…Similar results were reported with the Coloplast (Coloplast, Minneapolis, MN, USA) device [ 19 ], although there is evidence that the Coloplast’s hydrophilic coating produces substantial antimicrobial properties in addition to the antibiotic solution the device is dipped in (rifampicin-gentamicin or vancomycin-gentamicin) [ 20 ]. A 2020 study compared the impact of different dipping solutions on postoperative infection [ 21 ]. The authors observed that the combination of vancomycin and gentamycin dipping solution resulted in the lowest infection rate, while rifampicin inclusion increased the infection rate, possibly indicating a change in microbial resistance patterns.…”

“…Additional, modern penile implants are either coated by antibiotics or have hydrophilic coatings that allow the distribution of antibiotics into the tissue. These innovations have also led to reduced infection and revision rates [12].…”
