Impact of ambient air pollution on physical activity among adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Existing literature in general suggested that air pollution discouraged physical activity. Current literature predominantly adopted a cross-sectional design and focused on the United States. Future studies are warranted to implement a longitudinal study design and evaluate the impact of air pollution on physical activity in heavily polluted developing countries.

“…Many studies find that people are likely to stay indoors in response to elevated air pollution levels (Neidell, 2009), reduce physical activities, and increase sedentary behaviors such as sitting, reclining, and lying (Jerrett et al, 2010;McConnell et al, 2014;Li et al, 2015;An et al, 2018b). These behaviors may reduce the net calories expended and increase body weight and obesity risk (WHO, 2018a).…”

“…Thermal inversions occur when the temperature in the upper atmospheric layer is higher than that of the lower layer, thereby trapping air pollution near the surface. The formation of thermal See the review in An et al (2018b). 4 See detailed discussion in Section 2.…”

“…Next, while the adverse consequences of air pollution on population health have been frequently reported [15], its effect on child physical activity is largely unknown, especially in a European context [16]. Exploring this association is crucial, as UK research highlights that children walking to school are exposed to higher pollution levels than passive commuters [17].…”

“…Many health studies have connected adverse health effects with spending significant amounts of time near high-traffic roads with elevated air pollution levels [9] [10] [11] [12]. Otherwise, green spaces are reported to improve health status once people use public areas to perform physical activity and have a leisure time, which serves as a key strategy to maintain and improve population health [13]. Although, in an urban scenario, most of these areas are located near air pollutants sources, as vehicle fleet [14].…”
