Impact of Adding a Pictorial Display to Enhance Recall of Cancer Patient Histories: A Randomized Trial

Abstract: Most studies examining the institution of handover protocols in the health care setting have failed to harness the power of pictures and other representative images. This study demonstrates the ability of pictorial displays to improve both immediate and delayed recall of patient histories without increasing review time. These types of displays may be amenable to generation by software programs and have the potential to enhance information transfer in various settings.

“…It is difficult to differentiate between degenerative and inflammatory joint pains because accumulation of synovial fluid is observed in patients with degenerative or inflammatory joint pain, although not in patients with psychogenic rheumatism. Therefore, it is important to try as much as possible to examine not only the presence or absence of joint swelling but 15 Health also the presence or absence of inflammatory arthritis-specific synovial thickening. Unlike palpation of an accumulation of synovial fluid, palpation of synovial thickening is difficult because it is not easy to differentiate between synovial thickening and soft tissue such as subcutaneous fat (Table-4) 2) .…”

“…It is known that oral and written explanations of the conditions and findings along with the provision of images save valuable time required to understand the conditions, facilitates the understanding and retention of information. This is known as the picture superiority effect (PSE) 15) . Since articular US is also an imaging, it may increase PSE.…”

“…To improve the service quality of long-term home care, many researchers introduced health education tools in the field of health care. This included pictorial tools for interventions, to help those with low literacy levels enhance their understanding of health knowledge [3] and improve the recall process of patients after treatment [4]. Furthermore, using images in an environment can reduce negative emotions [5].…”
