Impact of acidification and eutrophication on the distribution of fish species in shallow and lentic soft waters of The Netherlands: an historical perspective

Abstract: The species richness and composition of fish assemblages were examined in lentic soft waters in The Netherlands. The selected bodies of water reflected a large variation in geomorphological and limnological factors. In total, 24 fish species were encountered in Dutch soft waters. During 1983-I984 Esox lucius. PercaJluviarilis. Ruiilus rutilus, Scardinius eryrhrophthalmur, Tinca tinca and Umbra pygmaea were quite common. In slightly acid and alkaline waters (pH25) Rutilus rutilus. Scardinius erythrophthalmus. P… Show more

“…In the Netherlands, pumpkinseed have been bred in captivity since 1902 (Looijen 1948). Following its release, pumpkinseed were primarily restricted to interconnected running waters throughout the country (De Nie 1996), but were recorded from a few isolated waters (Leuven and Oyen 1987). Pumpkinseed abundance in running waters is generally low (Klaar et al 2004;Hoogerwerf et al 2005; This study).…”

“…They were the only species encountered in water of p H < 5, compared to a relative abundance of only 1 .6 % in water of p H ^ 5 (Leuven and Oyen, 1987). In contrast to other teleosts, which are unable to repro duce in water of p H < 5, mudminnows suc cessfully reproduce even at p H 3.5 (Dederen et al, 1986).…”

“…Since the main function of prolactin is the control of the branchial permeability to water and ions, in particular sodium (Hirano, 1986; W e n d e laar , we have inter preted the increased prolactin cell activity in acid water as an appropriate endocrine response for maintaining water and ion bal ance in acid water (Wendelaar Bonga et al, 1987;Flik et al, 1989). W e have evidence that prolactin is also involved in the accli mation to acid water of eels (Wendelaar Bonga and Balm, 1989).A survey of recently acidified freshwater lakes and bogs in the Netherlands has re vealed that in water below p H 5 only one species is able to survive: the East-American m udm innow (Dederen et al, 1986;Leuven and Oyen, 1987). It was introduced in Europe some 70 years ago and at present it frequently occurs in high densities in acid bog lakes at a p H as low as 3.1.…”
