Impact of a Dietary Supplement Containing 1,3-Dimethylamylamine on Blood Pressure and Bloodborne Markers of Health: A 10-Week Intervention Study

Abstract: Background:1,3-dimethylamylamine is a commonly used ingredient within dietary supplements. Our prior work with this agent indicates a transient increase in blood pressure (systolic in particular) following oral ingestion of a single dosage, but no significant increase in resting blood pressure following chronic ingestion. Moreover, intervention studies involving both two and eight weeks of treatment with finished products containing 1,3-dimethylamylamine indicate minimal or no change in bloodborne markers of h… Show more

“…However, it is noteworthy that the subjects of both studies were regularly engaged in physical activity protocols (which may have contributed to the weight loss) and both studies were financed by USP Labs, the OEP manufacturer. Also, our results corroborate with data found by Whitehead et al [17], that no effect on body weight was observed with supplementation of 1–3 serving OEP during a period of 10 weeks without exercise training.…”

“…A follow up to this study conducted by Whitehead et al [21] supplemented with the same product containing caffeine and 1,3- dimethylamylamine (Jack3d™) over a 10-week period in healthy males and also found it did not negatively impact hematological markers of health when consumed daily.…”

“…A key ingredient 1,3-dimethylamylamine (also known as germanium, geranamine or DMAA) has been implicated for potential contraindications. DMAA is purported to increase both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in young and healthy men and women immediately following ingestion, although these observations have been inconsistent during longer treatments with OEP in young men [4][5][6][7]. DMAA is also purported to cause false-positive results for amphetamines on select immunoassays, a profound implication for athletes with sanctioned governing bodies [8].…”
