The correlation between tree-ring widths and climate was developed using Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica after which mean maximum temperatures of June-July since 1829 were reconstructed. Results show that the transfer function of temperature explains more than 40% of the variance and that the reconstruction sequence was consistent with several reconstructed temperature variations in the region. Over the past 181 years, climate in the region has undergone eight distinct low temperature and eight high temperature periods. A high temperature period in the 1920s to 1930s is consistent with a drought that occurred in most regions of northern China. Periods of drought in the 1870s were also identified. There was no significant increase or decrease in mean maximum June-July temperatures over the last 181 years, although since the 1950s temperatures have increased gradually. A warming trend has become more pronounced since the early 1990s but temperature levels are not significantly higher than those of the 1850s. A multi-taper spectral analysis shows that there are significant periodicities of 2.4, 2.8, 4.9, 5.1 and 21.3 years in the sequence of reconstructed temperatures. Temperatures were also affected by global climate events and solar activity.

Abstract:The urban environment characterized by various stresses poses challenges to trees. In particular, water deficits and high temperatures can cause immense drought stress to urban trees, resulting in reduced growth and die-off. Drought-tolerant species are expected to be resilient to these conditions and are therefore advantageous over other, more susceptible species. However, the drought tolerance of urban trees in relation to the specific growth conditions in urban areas remains poorly researched. This study aimed to analyze the annual growth and drought tolerance of two common urban tree species, namely small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill. (T. cordata)) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L. (R. pseudoacacia)), in two cities in southern Germany in relation to their urban growing conditions. Marked growth reductions during drought periods and subsequent fast recovery were found for R. pseudoacacia, whereas T. cordata exhibited continued reduced growth after a drought event, although these results were highly specific to the analyzed city. We further show that individual tree characteristics and environmental conditions significantly influence the growth of urban trees. Canopy openness and other aspects of the surrounding environment (water supply and open surface area of the tree pit), tree size, and tree species significantly affect urban tree growth and can modify the ability of trees to tolerate the drought stress in urban areas. Sustainable tree planting of well adapted tree species to their urban environment ensures healthy trees providing ecosystem services for a high quality of life in cities.

To understand how urban tree growth has responded to the accelerating expansion in population and urbanization, an understanding of the tree-climate-urban ecosystem relationship is necessary. To this end, a metropolitan, suburban, and rural forest stand in and near Shenyang; and a rural forest stand in Weichang, were sampled in southern Northeast China. Radial growth variability of 109 Chinese pines (Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.), established before 1900 within and around the city, was measured. The contents of trace elements in tree rings were also examined to detect the possible relationship to urban environmental contamination. All sampled trees crossdated well, indicating a homogeneous common influence of regional climate. For the common period of 1901-2000, the radial growth of all trees was significantly affected by local and regional climate, especially temperature and precipitation in winter and spring, respectively. From the rural to the metropolitan areas, a significant decreasing relationship in the response of trees to climatic factors was detected. These decreases occurred over time and in tree stands within the same location or between different sites, and also corresponded with the increasing influence of local urbanization and industrialization on the urban environment during the last century. Particularly strong influences are the increase of population, urban built-up area, and urban agricultural and industrial activities. Decreases in mean sensitivity of Chinese pines were also found and are most likely related to the intensification of anthropogenic activities and environmental change. Based on tree-ring width growth in rural areas, a growth pattern of urban trees without anthropogenic disturbances was established. After removing the climate-related signals from actual urban tree growth, the impact of anthropogenic disturbances was chronologically developed.
