Impact and mechanical properties of different composite systems modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract: Kevlar and glass fiber composites have distinguished mechanical properties such as specific strength and stiffness, resistance to impact loading, and tailoring the overall properties to meet the needs of a specific application. Enhancing their mechanical properties via incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into their polymer matrices and proper characterization are very important for automotive and aerospace applications, which is the main objective of this study. This article presents an experimental study… Show more

“…It was seen that the 0.5% CNT added aramid fiber reinforced structure exhibited the best impact energy absorption performance. Badawy and Khashaba [29] added 0.5% by weight CNT to epoxy polymer matrix composites consisting different glass and aramid fiber fabrics and their mechanical performances were investigated. After the applied impact tests of 20 J, the absorbed energy with help of CNT increased 11.4% in pure epoxy matrix, and glass and aramid fiber which reinforced with CNT, 1.6% and 1.5% performance increase were observed respectively.…”

“…Additionally, previous researchers only focused on the crashworthiness of the thinwalled energy absorber tubes when subjected to axial crushing loads, lateral compression, or three-point bending. [37][38][39][40][41][42] According to the literature review, there will be a significant improvement in bending stiffness, structural crashworthiness, and weight reduction if a semicircular lateral corrugated CFRP core is applied to the cylindrical tube.…”

“…Results show that the above-mentioned mechanical properties improved higher than those without MWCNTs. 18 Interlaminar shear strength and Bending strength of GFRP composites are enhanced by the inclusion of 0.75% wt MWCNT. The experimental results exhibited the trends in the temperature-dependence and were similar to the Inter-laminar Shear Strength (ILSS), flexural modulus and dynamic properties.…”
