The access to clean and drinkable water is becoming one of the major health issues because most natural waters are now polluted in the context of rapid industrialization and urbanization. Moreover, most pollutants such as antibiotics escape conventional wastewater treatments and are thus discharged in ecosystems, requiring advanced techniques for wastewater treatment. Here we review the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to optimize pharmaceutical wastewater treatment systems, with focus on water quality, disinfection, renewable energy, biological treatment, blockchain technology, machine learning algorithms, big data, cyber-physical systems, and automated smart grid power distribution networks. Artificial intelligence allows for monitoring contaminants, facilitating data analysis, diagnosing water quality, easing autonomous decision-making, and predicting process parameters. We discuss advances in technical reliability, energy resources and wastewater management, cyber-resilience, security functionalities, and robust multidimensional performance of automated platform and distributed consortium, and stabilization of abnormal fluctuations in water quality parameters.

The reliability of smart micro‐grids (SMGs), as a cyber‐physical system (CPS), might be influenced by cyber failures and information transmission faults. Several Monte Carlo simulation (MCS)‐based approaches have been reported to assess the reliability of SMGs and smart grids. On the other hand, analytical reliability assessment methods have been presented in some research works, while the cyber system has not been concerned. However, the literature shows a research gap in developing an accurate and fast reliability evaluation method for SMGs based on the unavailability of cyber elements and information transmission faults. This article tries to fill the discussed gap by adding the analytical modelling of cyber‐physical interdependencies and information transmission faults to available analytical methods, focusing on physical uncertainties. Comparing the proposed model with existing MCS‐based and analytical reliability evaluation methods illustrates the advantages of this research. Test results show that less than 5.7% expected energy not supplied (EENS) error occurs by the proposed method, which would be much faster than MCS‐based ones. Moreover, the sensitivity analyses highlight the impacts of the cyber network topologies on the cyber‐physical interdependencies.

Impact of Cyber Failures on Operation and Adequacy of Multi-Microgrid Distribution Systems

Large-scale successful integration of microgeneration, together with active loads, energy storage devices, and energy scheduling strategies, requires the extensive adoption of advanced information and communication technologies (ICTs) at the distribution network level; this brings so-called Cyber-Physical Multi-MicroGrid (CPMMG) systems into the picture. However, as such ICTs are not failure-free, their integration affects the system's operation and adequacy. To quantify how cyber failures influence a CPMMG system, this study proposes an adequacy framework based on sequential Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). In the proposed framework, the typical structure of a CPMMG is exemplified, and the consequences of various cyber failures in this system are explained. Possible operation modes-normal, island, joint, and shutdown modes-are then explained and modeled. Finally, the adequacy index Expected Energy Not Served (EENS) is computed based on the proposed methodology, and two new adequacy indices are proposed: Interrupted but Gained Compensation (IbGC) and Supplied by Expensive Resources (SbER). A comprehensive case study is conducted to reveal the salient features of the proposed framework.
