Impact absorption properties of carbon fiber reinforced bucky sponges

Abstract: We describe the super compressible and highly recoverable response of bucky sponges as they are struck by a heavy flat-punch striker. The bucky sponges studied here are structurally stable, self-assembled mixtures of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon fibers (CFs). We engineered the microstructure of the sponges by controlling their porosity using different CF contents. Their mechanical properties and energy dissipation characteristics during impact loading are presented as a function of their co… Show more

“…Therefore, the volumetric mass density is a nice criterion. For example, densities of 0.15–0.21 g cm −3 , 0.26–0.42 g cm −3 , 0.47–0.51 g cm −3 , 0.54–0.62 g cm −3 , 0.50–0.85 g cm −3 , 0.84–1.04 g cm −3 , 1.21–1.35 g cm −3 , and 0.81–1.39 g cm −3 , have been reported recently. CNT films can also be used in sandwich beams to enhance the damping performance, similar to the application of CNT forests …”

“…It has a high modulus (200-900 GPa), high tensile strength (2-7 GPa), low density (1.75-2.18 g cm −3 ) and high temperature resistance. CFs are often used as a reinforcement material in aircraft, automobiles, machine parts, boats, high-end sporting goods, pressure vessels and civil engineering [67][68][69][70][71][72]. Therefore, in this study, amide groups were grafted onto the surface of CFs.…”
