Artocarpus tonkinenesis (Moraceae) has been used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for the treatment of backache and joint diseases since many 100 years. We have previously shown that a crude extract of A. tonkinensis elicited anti‐inflammatory effects in rat collagen‐induced arthritis (CIA), with significant improvement of disease symptoms. However, the pharmacological basis of the bioactivity of A. tonkinensis extract is not known. In the present study, we have isolated four individual active components from A. tonkinensis extract by reverse phase high‐pressure liquid chromatography. The structures of the compounds were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry and their biological effects investigated. A novel biologically active flavonoid glucoside (5‐hydroxy‐8‐hydroxymethyl‐8‐methyl‐2‐[4‐(3,4,5‐trihydroxy‐6‐hydroxymethyl‐tetrahydro‐pyran‐2‐yloxy)‐phenyl]‐8H‐pyrano[3,2‐g]chromen‐4‐one) with an average molecular mass of 514.49 Da was isolated. We have named the compound artonkin‐4′‐O‐glucoside. The name ‘artonkin’ for the novel flavonoid part of the compound was coined from the Latin name of its source Artocarpus tonkinensis. The three other active flavonoid glucosides isolated and characterized were alphitonin‐4‐O‐β‐d‐glucoside, maesopsin‐4‐O‐β‐d‐glucoside and kaempherol‐3‐O‐β‐d‐glucoside. All four compounds were found to cause anti‐inflammatory effect with different potencies. The anti‐inflammatory effects demonstrated in the rat model of arthritis correlate well with the inhibition of mitogen‐induced T‐cell proliferation. Furthermore, the compounds inhibit production of cytokines, such as tumour necrosis factor‐α and interferon‐γ, in mitogen‐stimulated T cells in a concentration‐dependent manner. We postulate that the isolated flavonoids suppress T‐cell proliferation as well as cytokine expression and thereby contribute to an amelioration of arthritis severity in CIA.

Extensive phytochemical and chromatographic analysis of different root fractions of Jatropha pelargoniifolia Courb. (Euphorbiaceae) resulted in the isolation and identification of 22 distinct secondary metabolite compounds. Two new compounds, 6-hydroxy-8-methoxycoumarin-7-O-β-D-glycopyranoside and (3-(2-(methylamino) ethyl)-1H-indol-2-yl) methanol, were isolated and identified for the first time from a natural source. In addition, other known compounds, such as hovetricoside C and Nmethyltryptamine were isolated from Euphorbiaceae, and hordenine, Nmethyltyramine, their salts, cynaroside and linarin were identified in Jatropha spp. for the first time. Some isolated metabolites, such as β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol glucoside, curcusons D and C, naringenin, apigenin, cleomiscosins B and A, spruceanol, propacin, jatrophadiketone, and uracil were previously identified in various Jatropha species. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined using different spectroscopic techniques. The anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antipyretic, and antioxidant activities were evaluated for some adequately available isolated compounds. Compounds showed significant antinociceptive activity compared with the standard analgesic drug indomethacin. The edema size was significantly reduced (p< 0.05-0.001) in the animals treated with low doses (5 and 10 mg/kg) of the isolated compounds compared with those treated with a high dose (100 mg/kg) of standard anti-inflammatory drug (phenylbutazone). Furthermore, all tested compounds showed a significant (p< 0.05-0.001) reduction in the rectal temperature of hyper-thermic mice.

In Vietnam, two types of traditional medicine (TM) are practiced: thuoc nam, medicine of the South, and thuoc bac, medicine of the North, both of which are largely based on herbal drugs used by different Vietnamese ethnic groups. This review presents recently published information from various databases regarding TM, especially herbal drugs, and its integration with Western medical practices outside and inside Vietnam. We first discuss the integration of traditional and modern health concepts by Vietnamese immigrants living outside Vietnam. Next, we describe native and emigrated health education and practices of pharmacy students, health professionals, and citizens living in Vietnam. Finally, we report the recent biological validation of medicinal plants and non-herbal therapies emerging from Vietnamese TM and their current and potential medical uses as identified by Western approaches. The main example described here involves utilization of the tree Artocarpus tonkinensis by the ethnic minority of Black Hmong in northern Vietnam, who use a decoction of its leaves to treat arthritis and backache without apparent adverse effects. Our comprehensive review emphasizes that, although Vietnam has a very rich collection of TM practices (particularly the use of herbal drugs), these therapies should be biologically and clinically validated with modern Western methods for optimal integration of Western and traditional medicine in global populations.
