Immunoregulatory T Cell Subpopulations in Man: Dissection by Monoclonal Antibodies and Fc‐Receptors

Abstract: Until now, most of the studies on regulatory T cells have been based on culture systems in which human peripheral blood cells are stimulated by polyclonal stimulators like Pokeweed Mitogen (PWM). Our present contribution, however, deals with T cell-mediated regulation of the antigen-induced B cell activation, which exclusively leads to an antigen-specific IgM production (Heijnen et al. 1979a). Some authors' reports on regulatory activities of T cells, as tested in systems using polyclonal stimulators, differ f… Show more

“…The phenotypes of the major population (Leu-1-and -2-positive; DR-positive) suggest that these cells may be suppressor effectors (37). Indeed, a recent report shows that suppressor T cells are induced in neonatal mononuclear cell cultures at antigen concentrations that induce helper cells in adult cultures (38).…”

“…How ever, as a global index, an increasing ratio may actually reflect the increase in CD4+ suppressor-inducer T cells (a peculiar subset) and/or the decrease in CD8+ immuno competent cytotoxic T cells with increasing CD8+ sup pressive cells [27,28], It can also be hypothesized that the changes in the CD4/CD8 ratio may represent the anxietyrelated disruption of the normal circadian rhythm, abol ishing the normal morning CD4 nadir [ 15]. Chronic stress may also affect the normal trafficking of the different lym phocyte subpopulations.…”

“…The For Fc receptor assay, positive monocytes were excluded from counts on examination of Wright-stained cytospins. phenotypically suppressor/cytotoxic (CD8+) T lym phocyte subset is very heterogenous with respect to functional properties [10]. In the present study the ex panded CD8 + population exhibited efficient ADCC.…”
