Immunoreactive β-endorphin in sheep ovary

Abstract: Although the ovarian production of sex steroids is of obvious physiological importance, recent studies suggest that peptides such as oxytocin, relaxin and inhibin are also synthesized in the ovary. We report here the presence of immunoreactive (ir) beta-endorphin, ir-adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and presumptive high molecular weight forms of both in extracts of sheep ovary, consistent with ovarian production from a common precursor. Our findings suggest that beta-endorphin and ACTH are produced and secre… Show more

“…Characteristics and specificity of the ,B-EP and Nac-EP radioimmunoassays have been previously described in detail (10)(11)(12)(13). The primary antibody (R56) employed in ,B-EP radioimmunoassay studies was raised against synthetic ovine 63-EPI,3, (Peninsula Laboratories, Inc., Belmont, CA) and recognizes the undecapeptide sequence f3-EP,7-27.…”

“…β-Endorphin, one of the well-known representatives of this group of factors, has been found in the corpora lutea (CL) of sheep [31] and cows [10], in granulosa and interstitial cells of rodents [34,35], and in human ovary [3]. Met-enkephalin, another extensively examined opioid peptide, has been demonstrated in bovine, rabbit and human ovaries [6,30,41].…”

“…By immunoassay and immunofluorescence techniques, f3-EP has been detected in various nonneuronal tissues such as the gastrointestinal tract (3), pancreas (4), placenta (5), ovary (6), and testis (7). In both intracranial and other tissues, the extent of proteolytic cleavage and posttranslational processing (glycosylation, amidation, and acetylation) varies widely.…”
