“…Furthermore, proliferation of follicular cells from a solitary nodule was found to be independent of exogenous IGF-I, confirming the potential autocrine role of IGF-I in proliferative thyroid disease (Williams et al 1988). Cell culture studies of follicular cells from several species have shown that IGFs synergise with, and are obligatory for, the stimulatory effects of TSH on both thyroid growth and function (Eggo et al 1985, 1990, Ollis et al 1989, Williams et al 1988, whereas TSH alone is ineffective. The requirement for both TSH and IGF-I for follicular cell growth in vitro has subsequently been confirmed in vivo.…”

“…ANP has been identified in human and pig thyroid follicular cells and is secreted basolaterally by pig thyroid cells in culture (Sellitti & Hughes 1990). High-affinity ANP receptors are found on human thyroid cells which (at least at high ANP concentrations) are coupled to the release of cGMP (Tseng et al 1990).…”

“…There have been a number of studies of ANP production in thyroid gland (7,9), but these have detected only a weak expression of ANP by immunofluorescence or the RT-PCR method. Although an immunofluorescence study showed that ANP production was detected in human thyroid follicular cells but not C cells (9), our data confirmed strong gene expression and production of ANP in rat thyroid medullary carcinoma, which is C cell neoplasm. Although it is difficult to reconcile these conflicting data, a change in C cell characteristics following carcinogenesis may be responsible.…”

“…Atrial natriuretic peptide is stored in specific secretory granules in atrial and ventricular myocytes of several species (8,18,27). ANP-like immunoreactivity was also found in several extra-cardiac organs as central ncrvous system (12,23), adrenal medulla and sympathetic ganglia (10), salivary glands (4), sweat glands (25), thyroid gland (21), thymus (28), vena cava and pulmonary veins (15,26). ANP release by atrial myocytes seems to be directly correlated to atrial distension (13,19,20,24).…”
