Immunomodulatory properties of titanium dioxide nanostructural materials

Abstract: OBJECTIVES:Although titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructural materials have been widely used in Biology and Medicine, very little is known about immunomodulation mechanism of these materials. Objectives of this study are to investigate in vitro immunomodulatory effects of TiO2. Immunosuppressant may lower immune responses and are helpful for the treatment of graft versus host diseases and autoimmune disorders.MATERIALS AND METHODS:In this study, we used H2Ti3O7 titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNT) nanotubes along wi… Show more

“…Modifying material properties may decrease the immune response to implanted biomaterial [ 102 ]. In this sense, it is known that the modification of implant surfaces with titanium oxide (TiO2) nanotubes positively affect the osseointegration, probably by switching the phenotype of peri-implant macrophages from the pro-inflammatory (M1) subset to a pro-regenerative one (M2) [ [104] , [105] , [106] , [107] , [108] , [109] ] ( Fig. 2 A).…”

“…Titanium dioxide NPs (TiO 2 NPs) have a safe profile and are nontoxic to mammalian cells as they are chemically inert and stable under physiological conditions [ 161 , 162 , 163 ]. This biocompatibility has attracted great interest and has made it possible for its use in numerous applications, ranging from pigments in paints, toothpaste, the absorption of ultraviolet light in sunscreen lotions, food additives, and—recently—agriculture and biomedicine [ 164 ].…”
