Immunomodulatory effect of curcumin on hepatic cirrhosis in experimental rats

Abstract: Cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease. The present work aimed to evaluate the regulatory immune effect of curcumin in hepatic cirrhosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) injections in experimental rats’ model. Chronic liver fibrosis was induced in experiment animals by recurrent injections of CCl4 for more than 5 weeks. They were divided into five groups: first group was injected with normal saline, second group with CCl4, third, fourth, and fifth groups were injected with CCl4 (intraperitoneal injection) … Show more

“…The first discovered pharmacological activity of curcumin is an antibacterial effect, found in 1949 [29]. Further studies focused on revealing other therapeutic and biological activities of curcumin including antiproliferative [30], antimetastatic [31], antioxidant [32], anti-inflammatory [33], antidiabetic [34], antiangiogenic [35], immunomodulatory [36], antitumor [37], antiatherosclerotic [38] and a lipid lowering effect [39] and regulating blood pressure [40].…”

“…In rats exposed to carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ), the chronic liver fibrosis occurs due to enhanced expression of TGF-β1. TGF-β is one of the signaling pathways that is down-regulated by curcumin in alleviation of liver fibrosis ( Abo-Zaid et al, 2020 ). Liver dysfunction is a common phenomenon during DM.…”

“…Curcumin has an increasing effect on the signalling molecules nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf-2), Nrf2-NFkB (measured as mRNA) and protein expression ( 34 ), and a decrease in the cytokines TGF-1β and TNF-α and in IL-10 ( 33 ). In addition, curcumin reduces alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in hamsters and rats with CCl 4 -induced cirrhosis ( 33 , 35 ).…”
