Immunomodulatory activity of mefenamic acid in mice models of cell-mediated and humoral immunity

Abstract: Objectives:Previously, different nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been evaluated for their potential immunomodulatory activities. Mefenamic acid is a well-known NSAID and is used in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, inflammation, fever, and pain. To the best of our knowledge, promising data regarding the immunomodulatory activity of mefenamic acid is scarce. Current study investigates the immunomodulatory activity of mefenamic acid in different models of cell-mediated and humoral im… Show more

“…A dose of 2 mg/kg, administered intramuscularly 45 min prior to, or at the time of, surgical mulesing had no effect on pain-related behaviours, cortisol or β-endorphin response [ 344 ], although when administered intravenously, 2 mg/kg tolfenamic acid can reduce the mechanical nociceptive threshold in sheep [ 353 ]. Mefenamic acid has not been studied in sheep, and a single article on intraperitoneal administration in laboratory mice indicated that it had suppressive effects on both the cell-mediated and humoral immune systems [ 187 ].…”

“…Many medicinal mushrooms are used to treat various specific health problems [13,16]. As can be seen in Table 2, the extract of T. clypeatus showed activity on the other test microorganisms (2.5-10.5 mm).…”

“…Fresh cow red blood cells (CRBC) were obtained from cow's blood as described by Heden (1946) [12] and used as antigen [13]. Briefly, veinous blood was collected from cow in EDTA-tubes and kept in the laboratory for 15 min.…”
