Immunomodulation Induced by Avène Spring Water on Th1- and Th2-Dependent Cytokine Production in Healthy Subjects and Atopic Dermatitis Patients

Abstract: Avène spring water (ASW) is commonly used in France for treating atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Previous works demonstrated modulation of cell membrane fluidity by ASW. The aims of the present study were (a) to investigate a possible in vitro effect of ASW on Th1- and Th2-dependent cytokine production using peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy individuals and (b) to investigate both the in vitro effect of ASW on AD patients’ cells and the in vivo cellular and clinical modifications induced by a 3-… Show more

“…This suggests that balneotherapy with mineral water can be effective for treatment of diseases characterized by polarization of Th2 cells, such as atopic dermatitis. The effects of mineral water on cytokines produced by Th2 cells are immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory, as demonstrated by reduced levels of IL-423,27,28.…”

“…In recent years, several studies have shown the clinical efficacy of Avène thermal spring water in AD, in particular immunomodulation of Th1-dependent and Th2-dependent cytokine production 16–21. In vitro experiments have also demonstrated multiple effects of Avène thermal spring water on numerous mediators involved in the immune response and on membrane fluidity, in addition to antiradical and anti- inflammatory properties, and stimulatory effects on keratinocyte differentiation 22.…”

“…Based on findings reported to date, we conclude that the following immune parameters can be used to evaluate the effects of foods on the clinical symptoms of allergic patients: (i) parameters to directly assess clinical symptoms in allergic patients: skin test (75,82), skin-induced response (76), SCORAD score (74,78,90); (ii) parameters that vary in association with the clinical symptoms of allergic patients: TNF-α level (65,66,79,91), soluble CD4 level (67), soluble CD23 level or inducible surface CD23 level (68,78,92), soluble IL-2R level (67,68,93,94), soluble VCAM level (70,78), amount of granular protein in eosinophils (ECP, EPX) (67,86,95); (iii) parameters possibly involved in the clinical symptoms of allergic patients: IgG 4 level (75), IL-4/IFN-γ production (81,96), TGF-β level (67,97,98), eosinophil number (81,99) (Table 1). …”
