“…Corticosteroid therapy may contribute t o depressed phagocytosis and infection in SLE, but infections were a frequent cause of death in the precorticosteroid era (32) and SLE patients on no or low doses of steroids are prone to develop infection in comparison t o similarly treated patients with rheumatoid arthritis and nephrotic syndrome (33). Whatever the mechanism whereby serum from patients with SLE suppresses phagocytosis and release of lysosomal enzymes, it may help explain other defects in cell-mediated immunity that have been demonstrated in SLE patients (7)(8)(9).
