Immunological monitoring and immunotherapy in carcinoma of the lung

Abstract: One hundred and seven patients with carcinoma of the lung underwent immunologic testing, and 62 of these patients were randomized to an immunotherapy protocol comparing the effects of Pasteur strain BCG, either alone or combined with allogeneic tumor cells, to the effects of no immunotherapy. Patients with residual disease left at the time of surgery or with metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis showed no increase in survival as a result of this form of immunotherapy. An insufficient number of patients w… Show more

“…On the other hand, we could demonstrate a depres sion in the T cell percentages only in 22% of patients and we could not confirm data from other investigators who found a significant decrease of RFC also in the early stages of bronchogenic carcinoma [9,22], The skin reactivity, tested with varidase and PPD, was im paired in 73% of the cases, using the first antigen, and in 43% of the cases with PPD. Results comparable to ours were obtained by Wells et al [27,28] who studied the delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction to sev eral antigens in patients with lung cancer and cancer of the cervix.…”

“…One of the main problems in interpreting these results was to know the extent to which the patients were free of tumour after apparent complete surgical removal. This is important in that several previous studies, including those on CMC referred to in the introduction, have shown that various aspects of cell-mediated immunity appear to be suppressed as a result of tumour growth (Southam, 1968;Twomey et al, 1974;Anthony et al, 1975;Cochran et al, 1975;Oldham et al, 1976).…”

“…A clear depression of T-cells dependent immunity in primary neoplasms of the CNS has recently been suggested: the immunological failure, as in lymphatic and epithelial tumors, should be fairly related to the degree of malignancy of the neoplasm [8,17], Several reports have emphasized the main findings of this particular 'défaillance' of the immunocompétence in malignant gliomas of adults: (I) The normal behavior of B-cell dependent pool. (2) The depression of delayed hypersensitivity reactions.…”
