Immunological, hematological, biochemical, and histopathological studies on cows naturally infected with lumpy skin disease

Abstract: Aim:Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an infectious viral disease of cattle caused by LSD virus (LSDV) of the family Poxviridae characterized by skin nodules covering all parts of the body. There are many aspects of LSD remaining unknown, thus immunological, hematological, and biochemical parameters were estimated.Materials and Methods:During an outbreak of LSD in Sharkia governorate from Egypt, 211 cows aging (2-4 years) were examined clinically for the presence of LSD lesions during the period from July to Novembe… Show more

“…Similar variations have been reported in a former study that describes the reaction after LSD vaccination (Abutarbush et al., ). Granulocytes have also been recorded in natural and experimental LSDV infections (Prozesky & Barnard, ; Awadin et al., ; Tageldin et al., ; Nemat‐Allah, ). Their almost consistent presence suggests their possible contributory role to the immune responses associated with either viral infection or vaccination.…”

“…After sixty days of ATZ exposure, blood samples from all groups were obtained by puncturing the caudal vein. The samples with anticoagulant were used for leucogram analysis; serum was collected by centrifugation (Hashem, Mahmoud, & Farag, ; Hashem, Neamat‐Allah, & Gheith, ; Mahmoud, ; Neamat‐Allah, ; Neamat‐Allah & Damaty, ; Neamat‐Allah & Mahmoud, ; Salem, Badr, & Neamat‐Allah, ) used for the biochemical tests.…”

“…LSDV infections cause significant economic losses in various respects, such as by inducing severely reduced milk production, weight loss, abortion, infertility and/or hide damage. These infections produce marked hematological, biochemical and immunological alterations (Neamat-Allah 2015). LSD is characterized by fever, nodules (2-5 cm in diameter) on the skin and mucous membranes, lesions in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, and enlarged superficial lymph nodes (Salib and Osman 2011).…”
