Background: After indirect capping, injured odontoblasts generate reactionary dentin, whereas after direct capping of a pulp exposure pulp, cells stimulate the formation of reparative dentin. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of two direct capping agents on pulp tissue reactions: Hydrogel (a bovine serum albumin (BSA)/glutaraldehyde,) and Dycal (a calcium hydroxide-based capping agent). Methods: In 6-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats, occlusal cavities were drilled in the first maxillary molars, and the pulps were exposed. In one of the groups, 24 right molars were capped with Hydrogel (G1), whereas in the other group 24 M were capped with Dycal (G2). After 1 to 4 weeks, the rats were anaesthetized intraperitoneally (six rats per group) and perfused intracardiacally with 4 % paraformaldehyde fixative. Maxillary molar's blocks were demineralized with a 4.13 % EDTA solution, embedded in paraffin, and the sections were histologically stained. Measurements of the thickness of reactionary dentin and area of inflammation were measured with ImageJ software. Results were compared with Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests at p = 0.05. Results: One week after Dycal capping, a statistically significant large number of aggregates of pulp cells enlightened pulpal inflammation compared to Hydrogel. At 2-3 weeks, reactionary dentin formation was increased at the periphery of the pulp chamber. After 4 weeks, a dentinal bridge sealed partially the pulp exposure, while tunnel defects persisting across reparative osteodentin. In contrast, 1 week after Hydrogel capping, inflammation was barely detectable. Hydrogel induced the massive apposition of reactionary dentin at the pulp periphery, and reparative dentin was developing within the pulp. The degradation of Hydrogel releases glutaraldehyde acting on pulp cells as a fixative and consequently favoring BSA bioactivity. Conclusion: After Hydrogel capping, nemosis stimulates pulp mineralization, improving reactionary and reparative dentin formation. In contrast, the highly alkaline compound Dycal produced inflammation within the pulp. The differences between the two capping agents suggest that Hydrogel might present some clinical advantages over Dycal.

Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on CD31 expression in pulp tissue repair of human primary teeth. Materials and methods Fifteen mandibular primary molars were divided into the following groups: GI-calcium hydroxide (CH), GII-PBM + CH, and GIII-PBM + zinc oxide/eugenol (ZOE). In the GII and GII groups, an indium-gallium-aluminum phosphide (InGaAlP) diode laser was used for the irradiation through 320-μm diameter optical fiber in contact with pulp tissue. The red laser diode parameters were set at 660-nm wavelength, 10-mW power output, 2.5-J/cm 2 energy density, 50-60-Hz frequency, output beam area of 0.04 cm 2 , and irradiation time of 10 s in continuous mode. After pulpotomy treatment, clinical and radiographic follow-ups were accomplished until the teeth achieved regular exfoliation period. Teeth were extracted for histological analysis and immunolocalization of CD31. Histopathological statistical analyses were performed by Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn test to determine statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). Results Although GII showed no inflammation or discreet inflammatory cells, the comparison among the groups using a score system revealed no statistically significant differences regarding inflammation and the amount of blood vessels. The immunohistochemistry analysis revealed positive CD31 expression in the blood vessels of all the studied groups. Immunostaining was observed in large blood vessels associated with inflammatory cells on GI and GIII, whereas GII showed discreet immunostaining predominantly in small blood vessels scattered throughout the pulp tissue with none or rare inflammatory cells. Conclusion The CD31 expression was greater in the group PBM when associated with calcium hydroxide. Photobiomodulation therapy followed by calcium hydroxide helped in repairing and seemed to regulate angiogenesis and leukocyte migration processes in the remaining pulp tissue after primary teeth pulpotomy.

Natural polymers are used more frequently in packaging as alternatives to synthetic plastics. Cornstarch is one of the cheapest carbohydrate biopolymers that form films with suitable properties and appearance but considerably larger hydrophilicity and low mechanical characteristics compared to synthetic films. Incorporating curcumin into cornstarch films improves mechanical and antimicrobial properties and curcumin release into aqueous solutions of the films. The results show that the introduction of curcumin decreases the water solubility of the edible films from 3.58% to 1.49% and the moisture absorption from 2.87% to 1.94% (p < 0.05) and increases the length of films from 40% to 80% without changing their thickness. Examination of color properties shows that the increased curcumin concentration leads to a decrease in transparency and an increase in the redness and yellowness indices. These properties change from 72.2, 3.5, and 5.1 to 39.2, 21, and 13.7, respectively. The number of mold and yeast colonies in the cheese sample decreases during the storage period of 5 days. Generally, the findings indicate that the bioactive film of corn starch and curcumin (0.5%) can be used as a suitable coating for food products.
