Immunohistochemical studies of wound healing after monopolar electrocautery and ultrasound submucosal inferior nasal turbinate reduction in sheep

Abstract: Correlation of fibronectin and collagen III immunoreactivity to histopathologic findings suggests different ECM repair processes between MEC and UTR turbinate tissue reduction. The use of CD68 and MMP9 provides additional clues to the mode of actions of these techniques and to the molecular and cellular events of the nasal mucosa wound healing process.

“…Collagen III, fibronectin and matrix metalloproteinase-9 were increased in turbinate tissue reduction in experimental animals. 10 Submucosal diathermy produces (SMD) effects by applying an alternating current in a megahertz frequency range to the tissue while the KTP (potassium titanyl phosphate)-532 appears to be an effective laser for the photocoagulation of the turbinates to relieve refractory vasoactive dysfunction. 11,12 Photocoagulation properties of KTP-532 laser helps in reducing the mucous secreting glands in either in their number or function in the nasal mucosa.…”
