Immunohistochemical marker panels for distinguishing between epithelioid mesothelioma and lung adenocarcinoma

Abstract: The distinction between epithelioid mesothelioma and lung adenocarcinoma remains an important diagnostic challenge for surgical pathologists. The aim of the present study was to select a limited and appropriate panel of antibodies that can differentiate between epithelioid mesothelioma and lung adenocarcinoma. Specimens of 90 epithelioid mesotheliomas and 51 lung adenocarcinomas obtained from Japanese cases were examined using calretinin, WT1, AE1/AE3, CAM5.2, cytokeratin (CK) 5/6, vimentin, epithelial membran… Show more

“…10,38 In this study, combined use of the three antibodies that yielded 100% specificity for thymic carcinoma, that is, the antibodies for GLUT-1, CD5, and CEA, provided 91.6% sensitivity. Thus, combined use of these three antibodies should be useful for differentiating between thymic carcinoma and type B3 thymoma in biopsy specimens that have been crushed or are otherwise difficult to examine morphologically.…”

“…The summary of immunohistochemical staining results is presented in Table 1 Table 2, these results are compared to the latest published data. 13,[16][17][18] In addition to the above diagnostic markers, by now well known and widely used, a few novel antibodies, either ''positive'' or ''negative'' for MM, have recently been proposed, even though the freshly published results still require validation. Extracellular matrix glycoprotein tenascin-X is the largest member of the tenascin family and induces cell detachment by means of the intracellular p38 MAP (mitogen-activated protein) kinase pathway.…”
