Immunohistochemical Expression of the CD44 Variant 6 in Colorectal Adenocarcinoma

Abstract: The CD44 variant 6 (CD44 v6) has been postulated to be involved in both carcinogenesis and tumor progression. In the present study, CD44 v6 was stained immunohistochemically in 63 colorectal cancer tissues to assess significance of CD44 v6 in the carcinogenesis and progression of colorectal carcinoma. None of the normal colonocytes showed an expression of CD44 v6. CD44 v6 expression was very strong in 24, moderate in 13, and negative in 26 tumor tissues. A negative or moderate expression of CD44 v6 was signifi… Show more

“…This hypothesis is supported not only by our results concerning local recurrences and the survival, but also by the data presented by Soukka et al where they showed with squamocellular carcinomas that diminished CD44v6-expression was associated with poorly differentiated rapidly growing neoplasms (Soukka et al, 1997). In a very recent report by Ishida, a decreased CD44v6 expression was associated with a higher probability of invasion but not of metastasis formation in colorectal adenocarcinomas further supporting our finding (Ishida, 2000). Recently, Kahara et al published a small descriptive study on CD44 expression in 47 STS.…”

“…CD44v6 was expressed in 62 (43%) of 145 tissue samples of patients with colorectal adenocarcinomas, which is within the range (42-57%) described in the literature [6,7]. In cell culture, one of three colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines expressed CD44v6.…”

“…One isoform, CD44v6, became of special interest after a study by Gunthert et al [5], who showed that overexpression of CD44v6 confers metastatic capacity to pancreatic carcinoma cell line. High expression levels of CD44v6 have been described in 42% and 57% of colorectal carcinomas [6,7]. However, the prognostic relevance of CD44v6 in colorectal cancer has been considered controversial.…”

“…This appears to be contrary to other reports that demonstrate a correlation between CD44v6 expression in gallbladder carcinoma and extent of histological differentiation (Yanagisawa et al 2001a). However, in the case of colorectal adenocarcinoma there is some disagreement regarding the clinical significance of CD44v6 expression (Ishida 2000). Several authors report an association of CD44v6 expression with advanced stage and poor prognosis in colorectal carcinoma (Mulder et al 1997), whereas other investigators failed to find a correlation between expression and progression of colorectal carcinoma (Ishida 2000).…”
