Immunohistochemical Expression of p53, bcl-2, and p21 waf1 in 48 Argentinean Children With Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Abstract: Of 81% of cases with p53 overexpression, 46% exhibited a nonfunctional p53 pattern, and this may contribute to dysregulation of proliferation, bcl-2 expression in up to 46% of cases may reflect a failure of bcl-2 downregulation in pre-B and immature B cells.

“…According to the World Bank statistics, the DRC spends $15 US per capita on health care [45]. In addition, Bcl-2 expression is associated with the expression of the multidrug resistance molecule in NHLs [46,47]. The proportion of bcl-2 expression in our cohort (68.8%) was slightly high than 46% found in Argentina [46].…”

“…Nevertheless, even though p53-positive immunohistochemical staining does not imply a malignant phenotype, in the 92% of our p53-positive T-cell lymphomas, it could act as an important cofactor in proliferation, since wild-type p53 has been observed in rapidly proliferating cells and in some tumorigenic cell lines [43]. In our population, we have observed a high frequency of p53 overexpression in a pediatric NHL series including both T-and B-cell lymphomas [44]. The observed p53 expression is higher than that reported by several Asiatic groups, but it should be taken into account that the histological characteristics of T lymphomas of our series are different [8,22].…”
