Immunohistochemical demonstration of the serotonin neuron system in the central nervous system of the bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana

Abstract: The distribution of serotonin immunoreactivity in the brain of the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) was studied, using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) immunohistochemical method with serotonin antiserum. The somata of the serotonin neurons were mainly located in the raphe regions of the brain stem from the level of the caudal mesencephalon to that of the spinomedullary junction. A small number of serotonin neurons were also distributed as cerebrospinal-fluid contacting neurons in the preoptic recess organ (PRO)… Show more

“…Muñoz et al, 1995], a similar innervation pattern exists [see also Adli et al, 1988;Petkó and Sánta, 1992]. Additionally, the caudal rhombencephalic alar plate in urodeles is innervated by Leu-enkephalin, neuropeptide Y, and serotonin-immunoreactive fibers, similar to the situation in anurans [Ueda et al, 1984;Merchenthaler et al, 1989;Lázár et al, 1990;A. “…Their distribution is very similar to that of sero tonin immunoreactive cells in the tegmentum and they may contribute to the dense serotonergic plexus present in the ventral hypothalamic neuropil [Ueda et al" 1984],…”

“…Thornton and Geschwind (1975) found a dose-dependent potent stimulation of MSH release in the lizard Anolis carolensis. Ueda et al (1984) and Kondo et al (1983) demonstrated the presence of serotonergic fibers in the pars intermedia of Rana catesbeiana. That serotonergic innervation of the pars intermedia might be restricted to lower vertebrate species is suggested by the studies of Kondo and coworkers, who showed that the pars intermedia of the rat, hamster, and dog were serotonin negative.…”
